Study labels Indians as ‘worst tourists’

According to the findings of a recent global survey conducted by Expedia, a major online travel company, Indian tourists have been rated as among the worst travellers in the world among the 27-odd countries involved in the study. The survey held in association with almost 4,000 hoteliers around the world, judged tourists on criteria like manners, willingness to assimilate local culture and cleanliness among other things. While the Japanese have been rated the best, France and China are close contenders with India when it comes to starting off on the wrong foot in a new country.

Very interesting article! Glad to see U.S. travelers no longer command a top spot for obnoxious travelers!

I don't know about messy rooms, but we were famous (in the 1960s onward) for doing all the same things--loud, critical of everything, insensitive to the surroundings, demanding & being picky eaters!

Indians are great travelers in their own country. I predict, their children, who can afford it, will become good travelers outside India!

I think when you are new at something, in this case travel outside your home environment, it's not so surprising that alot of people behave badly. You have to have surplus money to travel or work that takes you away from home, you are just not going to understand all the new information you are getting. Some people love it & jump into it, but most older new travelers have a harder time with that.

My first time abroad (out of the U.S.) in 1970 I saw my first bidet in Paris. I thought it was for washing my feet & clothes! Thought it was a wonderful idea. I didn't find out it's real purpose for a couple of weeks, then I was kind of shocked Then I wished they had them at home.

IRONY: Here in the U.S. Indians dominate the hotel/motel industry. Go figure.

Well, are they such adorable angels really?!! Have you never seen
any number of Indian tourists devastate their beautiful surroundings
by strewing trash all around? Or treat their serene environment in the
midst of a reserve forest to thousand-decibel blaring loudspeakers?!

Yes, I have seen that! And it drives me crazy sometimes!

I think my meaning of "great" is different from how you took it. I didn't mean anything like "adorable angels" I meant they are enthusiastic & large numbers of Indians travel about their own country.

Dictionary for clarification:

1. Very large in size.
2. Larger in size than others of the same kind.
3. Large in quantity or number: A great throng awaited us. See Synonyms at large.

12. Informal Enthusiastic: a great lover of music.

Sorry! I knew my English comprehension would lead me into trouble someday .

Still. I needed to give vent to my anger, under whatever pretence!

No problem! And as you point out, that while Indians are enthusiastic travelers in their own country, many are still not "good" at it, bringing all the thoughtless habits with them!

That's certainly a generalization and not true for everyone who travels. But it only takes one loud thoughtless family among a 100 quiet ones to give a bad memory!

Of course, that's true everywhere!

In many places I've traveled in Europe & here at home, it's teenagers in groups who create the worst problems! LOUD, LOUD, LOUD! But that's really a different topic than "worst tourists"
