Sounds that you miss when you are away from India

One more thread. India as we all know is a very noisy country. However when you are away you miss some of these sounds.
Which sounds do you miss?

I miss the sound of seasoning that comes from every kitchen in India and also the sound of the pressure cooker!

Miss the sounds of aarti being performed.

The birds, especially the koels. And the crows, I love the sound of Indian crows talking.

Funnilly enough, when I am here it is the British birds that I miss, with their sweet delicate songs

Have never been to UK, would love to hear those birds that you mention.
I particularly miss the sounds of babbling waters that you hear when you go to the mountains (manali and surrounding areas) that is such a great sound.

reverse tunes... when a maruti or rickshaw backs up and plays a little tune like 'jingle bells', my favourite is 'lambada'
It was annoying when we lived near a taxi stand but now i miss the little sounds...
that and the sound of a cow coughing... strange, but we had a black cow near our house that came to visit every morning and we would be greeted with that low gutteral growly cough...
i definately do not miss the sounds of crows though...

Hi ladyv, here's a nice little site, courtesy of the bbc for listening to some of the UK's birdsongs. I particularly like the blackbird's, which, though not rare, is very beautiful!

sounds of India

... the man on the street who wakes me up, calling "Paaaannniiiiii!"
(At least that's what it sounds like).

I miss them too
My favourite was a tune called 'Ghilli'. I belief it's from a Tamil movie.
Does anyone know it?

I bought a musical reverse buzzer module with that melody in a car parts store in Mysore.
But I think it's labelled wrongly, at least the melody sounds different from the one in my memory

Waking up early - then dozing off for about an hour while all the street vendors start to make their rounds. They are uttering loud enough so that the people - like me - asleep or dozing - can hear - but it is not at all intrusive - sort of like half way between a folk ballad and a tv ad jingle - very unique - very india.

The classic sound is the train announcement as Yogagal said.

"Tray numba fife six doo tree to Chennaicentral platform numba one.... etc"

Check out one of my antique threads from over two years ago on this. And look up the "underhund" website that I referred to in about post 6 - it contains some absolutely excellent recordings from India.

Enjoy them!

I wonder if the Koel is the Indian bird I love the sound of? I never did find out the name of it. Its call is a bit like a one-phrase compressed wolf-whistle - ring any bells?

Anyway, thats one of my sounds. I also miss Indian crows, and auto-rickshaws, and the platform announcer at New Delhi railway station, with that musical tune they play first.

Last year when I was trekking with three other friends in the Uttaranchal, we have hired a pony to carry our loads. The pony had a bell on its neck and had a strange affinity for the patch of grass immediate to the tent I occupied. And for all the time we will listen to its rhythmic tunn... tunn.... tunn.... till we go to sleep, and as we wake up in the morning. Even though, I started to loath the sound after second day, now I feel it was the most charming sound in the given circumstances

Yes, Tim, that will be the koel ---the Indian Cuckoo. It is a very loud, resonant call, that, in city or country really echos around.
