Solo female in India? Would love yr advice...

(Let me premise this with an apology -- I originally posted this request in the Health and Well Being thread, and only belatedly noticed the action was in this room. But, alas, I tried and could not delete the thread in H&WB...)

I'm going to be living in Delhi for six months, volunteering at an NGO. I did a search and found that KathSF and Abraxus have traveled on their own to India; I was hoping anyone who had done so would share their experiences and perhaps some advice with me? I'm in my early twenties, tall, and an Irish redhead, so blending in won't be an option; I do speak Hindi/Urdu, however, which I expect should help. But I really don't know Delhi at ALL; in the past, I've traveled mostly in Rajasthan (and that with a group). So anyone familiar with Delhi -- any Don't Go areas? (Also, I read on the website of the US Embassy in Delhi that there have been incidents recently which prompt them to advise solo women not to take taxis or autos -- what?!? How am I to get around? Delhites? Anyone?)

Basically, any advice or suggestions regarding personal safety, Dos and Don'ts would be much appreciated! I intend to dress mainly in salwar kameez -- unless, Delhi being so cosmopolitan, that will make me stand out more. That, too, is something on which I'd welcome suggestions.

Thanks!

Lots of people (Male & Female) travel around India on their own without problems, it should be easier for you as you will be in Delhi most of the time.

Find yourself a good taxi/rickshaw driver and stick with him for your travels and you should be OK.

I can't give advice about Delhi, as I've never been.

Also, I have no idea of what it is like for a woman travelling on her own.

But at least this reply will 'bump' your thread back to the top; hopefully you will get more replies.

KathSF is in India at the moment (I think).

You'll never look like an Indian, but wearing salwar-kameez-dupatta will give folks the idea that you "know the score" and are a respectable woman.

Do keep in mind that "friendship" between men and women isn't in the culture of most Indians, so be very wary of any man's trying to relate on that level, and don't YOU try to initiate same, because you will inevitably be misunderstood.

If you're lost, ask the nearest woman -- even if her husband answers, keep your eyes on her, even when delivering appropriate thanks.

Buy your own meals, drinks, tea & Coca Cola... don't be obligated to some stranger who may make more of it than would be in your own country.

And if anyone grabs you inappropriately, start yelling "pervert"! Don't be silent about this -- it's a horrendous problem in India, called "Eve teasing" which makes it seem very innocuous -- but it's sexual molestation and needs to be properly identified.
