So what are your favorite song lyrics?
So what are your favorite song lyrics?
I've been quoting songs now at random and inopportune moments so often, so why not let's start this:
Currently listening to Vernon Dalhart, "The Runaway Train" (from the soundtrack to the Coen brothers' movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou?):

(Note weblinks could be justly provided here, but then this stuff tends to be copied all over pertinent lyrics sites for it, with there usually being no telling who started it. Yes, they'll usually be with their mistakes and typos 'n' all. One might seek to correct those where possible.) Cheb Khaled, "Oran Marseille," really like this (and many of his other) song. I know some heavily politically involved North African friends of mine consider him way too popular and in fact sexist; I know no better than just his songs extolling love were/are quite revolutionary in Algeria at the time. He of course stood at the forefront of what is known as Raï music. He's still very much active, btw. Now usually known as just "Khaled"; Cheb just means little I think, and he's not so little no more.

Patti Smith, always and somehow epitomizes America for me. This album (Trampin') I know drove me close to tears hearing it not that long after 9/11:

Patti Smith again, same album. Beautiful:

We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. ~

Hm. How's about that classic (late 1960's, early '70's at the very latest):
Quote:
George Harrison's "Brainwashed"
Brainwashed in our childhood
Brainwashed by the school
Brainwashed by our teachers
And brainwashed by all their rules
Brainwashed by our leaders
By our Kings and Queens
Brainwashed in the open
And brainwashed behind the scenes
God God God
A voice cries in the wilderness
God God God
It was on the longest night
God God God
An eternity of darkness
God God God
Someone turned out the spiritual light
Brainwashed by the Nikkei
Brainwashed by Dow Jones
Brainwashed by the FTSE
Nasdaq and secure loans
Brainwashed us from Brussels
Brainwashed us in Bonn
Brainwashed us in Washington
Westminster in London
God God God
You are the wisdom that we seek
God God God
The lover that we miss
God God God
Your nature is eternity
God God God
Your are Existence, Knowledge, Bliss
The soul does not love, it is love itself
It does not exist, it is existence itself
It does not know, it is knowledge itself
("How to Know God", page 130)
They brainwashed my great uncle
Brainwashed my cousin Bob
They even got my grandma
When she was working for the mob
Brainwash you while you're sleeping
While in your traffic jam
Brainwash you while you're weeping
While still a baby in your pram
Brainwashed by the military
Brainwashed under duress
Brainwashed by the media
You're brainwashed by the press
Brainwashed by computer
Brainwashed by mobile phones
Brainwashed by the satellite
Brainwashed to the bone
God God God
Won't you lead us through this mess
God God God
From the places of concrete
God God God
Nothing's worse than ignorance
God God God
I just won't accept defeat
God God God
Must be something I forgot
God God God
Down on Bullshit Avenue
God God God
If we can only stop the rot
God God God
Wish that you'd brainwash us too

Nice one, Theyyam
This must have been covered by so many, not sure where it originates. Probably just a traditional. Listening to the Diamanda Galás version:

The last verse in particular is probably my favorite bit of music I've come across yet.

Ah, yes; but then about 3/4 of Waits's work fits that bill to me
Nice one, indeed!(You'll know his The Black Rider, in collaboration with Robert Wilson and William Burroughs? Another such beauty, and just a month too early. The singing saw to go with it is also just perfect: )

Here's another favorite of mine:

btw Tom Waits again. This is one I'd like, nay, insist, to be played at my funeral:

More Nick Cave. I got a little bored with him after roughly his Let Love In, but really liked him before. I've seen him perform this live, it's a duet with Blixa Bargeld, of Einstürzende Neubauten fame, playing the father's role answering him, it's quite touching:

... Man, it's sometimes fun to just click on at YouTube & see where you get.
What all have I been looking at just now, and by way of childhood sentiment: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, "Mercy Seat"; Tom Waits, "Hold On"; Talking Heads, "Burning Down the House"; Men At Work, "Down Under"; Eurythmics, "Sweet Dreams"; Dr. Alban, "It's My life"; Ace Of Base, "All That She Wants"; Snap, "The Power" (man, that's just so good. I'd completely forgotten about it. Nice video, too, don't think I ever saw it before.)
Etc. Ah, I see Enigma's "Knocking on Forbidden Doors" popping up now.
