Skype on mobile phones

Hi all, I thought I should pass this info on....

my techy son assures me that 3 mobile is now offering FREE Skype services on mobile phones......

....so international mobile phone calls can now be free!!

It needs a 3 mobile simcard (available free off their website) and a phone that will support Skype (checkable online, apparently), and the other person needs the same or use of computer as normal.

I'm not a techy so I can't supply any more detail, but if anyone has any specific questions, I'll ask my son!

Hope this info is of use to someone....could save a fortune in mobile phone bills.. no call costs whatsoever...

I tried it connecting via my own wireless LAN. It logged in, but I couldn't make a call.

Seems one has to use the internet connection of one's mobile service provider. Didn't try for long, though...

oh right.........I know nothing about the technical side of things...

my son uses it for hours on end each day to chat with his girlfriend in Brunei

this is odd.... never bothered with skype on my phone but looked it up after your post and this is what it says.... this is for Skype lite for compatible phones. you can use wifi with skype for windows mobile though.

India aint on the list.

I suspect that it has to do with the laws governing IP telephony.

i dont think so.... skype lite calls are routed through the local operators and youre charged local or national call rates as per the operator....

Skype for windows mobile can be used thru wifi which should be possible in india. as per ip telephony laws skype cant even run their service in india without a license which if they do have and what youre saying is right then the skype lite service should also be available.

EDIT: or youre right and their service is illegal.... in india.

Selkie the offer from 3 is unrelated to what nick is referring to...

the offer from 3 is about not charging for the calls made from skype.... which would otherwise be billed to your data plan or per what i posted a local call in the uk....

the skyps service on a mobile from 3 can be used to make calls to any other skype user on any platform (including on a PC / a wifi device like the PSP or ipod touch or a windows mobile phone /cell phone with skype) anywhere in the world. how your son is able to call her in brunei depends on how she is connected....
