Certainly Skype is legal, it does work and if Internet Cafes have a fast connection and the programme then rip into it. What my be border line is the 'Skype Out' tool but if it is legal in the rest of the world then it should be ok in India but who knows.

If the cafes have Skype and they allow you to use Skype Out then the risk is all there's if it is illegal, they know best on that one me thinks.

Setting up your own phone company eg taking VoIP calls and routing them to Indian phones or vive versa is illegal and some people were prosecuted for this a few months ago (Elsewhere they'd have been making themselves wealthy and getting awards!).
I don't think that ising Skype is illegal. Perhaps if BSNL notice I haven't made any international phone calls since I got my broadband connection I might find out . It certainly works: I use SkypeOut and SkypeIn on my home connection. The only internet cafe chain I have much experienceof is i-Way. They also have phone booths and do low-cost international calls. This is probably true of others as well. I can't see them installing skype and loosing their own phone business...

Hey Skype is legal in india. Even internet telephony is - the telephony company has to have a license though. Also there are various other VOIP calling cards available in India which allow you to make calls to the US/Canada/UK for as low as Rs5/- per minute. They are spread out in most of the big cities. Also check-out at any DishNet hub, Reliance Web World - they also have some offerings.

Skype???
I had Skype on some disk in 2002(?) or sometime.... that time I had an excruciatingly slow [20 to 30 kbps] mtnl connection and unknowingly tore out all my hair in trying to use skype.
Please help me out here: 1. What is the minimum bandwidth reqd? Now I have 200 kbps actually measured speed connection [mtnl claims 256 kbps.... and i have no other alternative] 2. Will the old (2003) skype package work? Or should I download the latest version? 3. What is skype-in and skype-out? 4. I am told that pc to pc calls are free. PC to phone is charged. [yes? no?] At what rates for US and UK? I am a bit computer challenged.... so please dumb down your answers for my lower level of comprehension and thank you all in advance.

Avid Trecker, many of your questions are answered in This thread and you should also take a look around www.skype.com
It is claimed to work over a dial-up connection. I have 256 'broadband' from BSNL and Skype works fine. You should download and use the latest version. |

I use Skype on Dial up, though mine is round 48 kbps, some problems come up when you are talking with someone on a high speed connection with delays and if one of you is on a Mac with built in Mic it is a real pain for feed back etc. So using a separate mic and or head set is an advantage to cut out the feed back looping syndrome.
Windows PC to Windows PC works really good even on slow speeds, not sure about the Windows laptops with built in Mics as I have really only been paying attention to Macs. |
