Hey Canadians!

I was wondering if anyone has an idea of what the time frame and cost is to send things from India to Canada? I don't know exactly what I will be shipping yet, but I know I am doing lots of shopping so I will have to send some type of box home! Thanks.

International postage calculator

According to the IndiaPost website, if you send a small packet [upto 200 grams] through surface, it'd cost just Rs.37! Send it through air as a registered post requesting delivery report, the charge would be Rs.102.

They have a nice international postage calculator on the site [which broke on my browser but worked with Internet Explorer].

ps: I couldn't find any info on how long each mode of delivery would take

International couriers in India

Sure...but remember to use Speed Post only if you want the cheapest option. Their service isn't all that great. I've heard stories of people getting opened packages and have personally had trouble with incoming packages [they make no effort to contact you if the package gets stopped at customs!].

Other major courier services are Blue Dart, TNT India and FedEx India. Check out their rates on their websites.

i'm leary to mail anything home. i sent three letters home and not one of them made it to their destination. i've heard that sometimes that stamps are removed and resold. perhaps sending stuff via dhl or fedex is a better option? anyone know?

Oh, FedEx is very reliable. In my old workplace we used to FedEx our clients in US and Ca all the time. Never faced any problems. We also used TNT for some time. No issues with them either. They're reliable but much more expensive.

Well, that depends upon who's paying and how important is the package to be sent. Rs.1300 for a small package with 4 days' transit time does sound a bit expensive. Then again, if it's important...this isn't a big expense.

Corporate customers get a hefty discount as they send regularly.

Over the years, I've sent many packages from India to the US -- most by sea mail. One was opened (well, it had a big book in it that I hadn't declared -- maybe they thought it was hash?) but it was re-sealed and all contents were there. All parcels arrived safely, though they took several months.

Letters? Well, I always used aerogrammes from India in the old days and more recently used e-mail, and they always arrived.
