Research Work on Agra

We are a group of three, Mridula Dwivedi,, Anil Yadav and Robert V. Kozinets and we plan to write an academic paper for a conference on destination image of Agra.

The plan is to compare user generated data (from Indiamike and Thorn Tree) and compare it with supplier generated data (travel agents, government websites) on the internet. We had a chat with Nadrag and he granted the permission to use IM data. We will ask for permission for individual quotes separately. We have identified a lot of threads from Agra sub-forum and I must say we are excited about the paper. Thought we would share our plans with the community at large.

Gardener972, thanks for asking. Though I am relying on existing Agra threads but any opinion on Agra would be welcome. Also please point out any threads bout Agra that you found interesting.

Also academic convention is to quote people anonymously and not even use the screen names. I wonder what do members feel about this practice?

wondering, are you looking at sites like Tripadvisor, Virtualtourist, blogs, etc? Sites like Indiamike seem to skew off toward travel logistics, for some reason, with many fewer trip reviews and accounts, less content on the actual quality of the accomodation, what the experience of the place is like.

Gardener972, you can PM me at Indiamike.

Jenk, thanks a lot for your suggestion. As I said in the OP, our primary dataset is from IM and LP and a comparison with travel agent sites.

My personal opinion is that if planning to quote somebody, it is only polite to ask them their preference first.

Captain, all the direct quotes are used only after asking permission from the owner of the quote.

What I am trying to figure out is that even though the academic convention is to quote anonymously or with pseudonyms, to maintain privacy, but many who write online probably not mind getting quoted my the screen name?

Thats what I meant. Ask 'em that

Or, if you want to follow academic convention, tell them that

Isn't quoting people anonymously a contradiction in terms?

But I think Mridula asked to use something from one of my posts some time back, and IIRC, she did ask my preference --- which, on that occasion, was to credit the site as I was only repeating and condensing information mostly learned here anyway.

Right Nick, I have already done a paper (that I would hopefully be presenting in Leeds next month, I should be applying the visa soon) using IM and LP data. Actually, in academics anonymity is the way (privacy concerns). However with online data there is a further twist. Put any direct quotes into a search engine and you will get the information via a search engine.

But Nick, don't newspapers too quote sources without naming them?

Usually the sources have something to hide, or are covering their backsides

You asked about me. Do what you think is best for your paper, but credit the site if you can

I think it varies very much with context.

If it is a matter of expertise then people like to be named.

On the other hand, research of the sociological kind that involves personal details of people's lives requires anonymity.

Newspaper sources may be putting themselves at personal risk, and the right to anonymity is one that newspapers in UK have even defied the courts to maintain. Where it is a non-contentious matter, sources often are named.

Maybe this is all academic. I can only say that, in my previous instance, Mridula was more than reasonable with me, not only asking, but also informing me afterwards of the progress.

I have no doubt that she will do whatever is the needful

Apologies that the links to our profiles have changed. I am Mridula Dwivedi along with my colleague Anil Yadav and Robert V Kozinets working on the paper.

As an update the paper was accepted at the conference. But not sure about the funding to present the paper yet. But we are anyway planning to come up with a journal publication too. The only thing is that it would take time.
