What time do tey have Ramada 2004 in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh? I heared it is not exactly the same time!? How does it affect my travelling in those countries? Is it true that you cannot even drink water outside in public during Ramada? Please send your experiences, conserning Nepal too! |

Ramadan
hi,
ramadan fasting period starts Oct 15, 2004 (god willing ) and last for approx a month, the last day being 12 November. non-Muslims are not expected to follow fasting although if you want to show respect for local customs you might refrain from eating during the day. i decided to time my Pakistan trip to get out before the fasting starts, so that i won't have to eat in hiding ![]() source btw i may decide to land on 13 Nov when they start eating again, that will coincide with my birthday - celebrated by the whole Muslim world, how's that??? ![]()

Pakistan is great during Ramadan (and as a tourist you may eat during the day if you wish!! though few restuarants are open)
The place is dead during the day and come sunset there is a real carnival atmosphere in the streets as everyone comes out to talk, shop and eat I loved it. Also many restaurants were selling their food at half price for the occasion! A fact I only realised when I returned to Pakistan from India!! And thought I was being ripped off!! As for India and Nepal, well Shimla's got it right as usual!! |

cyber, i wouldn't want to find myself surrounded by hungry tribesmen in remote mountains of N Pakistan... (are pathan muslims?)
i know my own (bad) temper when i go without food for more than four hours...if i have a choice (and i do) i'll skip the fasting period. i must add (for sindy) that i received many encouraging replies on LP from people sharing experience of being in a muslim country during ramadan... no problem as far i could see. so, go, Sindy, go! |

Volga it really aint that bad I worked for years with three Egyptians during ramadan, doing 13 hour days of heavy lifting.
I asked how they managed it they just said they were used to it!! And they stayed in a good mood all day, amazing!! Don't know if the pathan are muslim, would be funny if they were, aren't they supposed to descend from nomadic jews?? |
