Pronunciation...

A quick question.
What is the correct pronunciation of the word 'Himalaya'?

I normally pronounce it: Hima-layah.
But, I've also heard people say: Him-marliah.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Himaalay in hindi, i guess. Him(snow) + aalay(abode), that is how it splits to. Hindi experts, pl correct if i am wrong.

I think the original sanskrit word is himaalayam.

i guess westerners tend to give stress to the second part, shortening the a in between, which makes it hima + laya ( which changes the meaning somewhat )

Oh that's interesting. I always thought (was told) that the "Himal" part refered to the individual groups of mountains, eg. the Annapurna Himal, etc.

That's cool, so I was pronouncing it correctly - even if my phonetic-type spelling was different.

Splendid!

Thanks chaps.

Himalaya : He- Ma-Laya
He as the English pronoun
Ma as in Mass
Laya: lie-yaa (or just lie)

Himalayas -- my yoga teacher from Chennai pronounces it:

hee-MAL-eeahs as opposed to a western hima-LAY-yas

Smile himaalaya

Have written the original sanskrit version:

हिमालय

hi is the short hi as in the english word english

maa as in maamaa miaa

la ... the short "uh" sound as in gum, bum [not the "h"]

ya ... same short uh sound

In the North, they truncate the last "a" to say hi-maa-lay

In the South, they add another "a" to say hi-maa-la-yaa.

Those are regional quirks... the orig sanskrit is as above.

Smile meaning

hima means "cold", "frosty", "frost", some have derived to mean "snow"

aalaya means residence or abode or "place to rest one's weary bones at the end of a hard day's work".

Trouble is I can't go to rest there everyday, after every day's work!!

cold-abode
frost-abode
snow-abode
chill-abode

take your pick!!

Now when sum'un says "Chill, man.... " it means "go to the himaalaya!!!"

Are you SURE that's the right way to spell it in Sanskrit? To me, it seems the "i" is out of place.
