Lightbulb Population growth

Came across some population projections for 2020 for Indian cities:

Delhi in 2007: 18 million, by 2020 28 million
Mumbai in 2007: 19 million, by 2020 25.7 million
Bangalore in 2007: 6.6 million, by 2020: 9.3 million
Chennai in 2007: 7 million, by 2020 8.7 million
Kolkatta in 2007: 14 million, by 2020 18 million

Shocking I would say.

Wondering how income growth compares with this

Average income growth may compare. But it will not take into account the widening chasm in purchasing power in one of the most basic requirements, housing. The rest of the population's basic needs are similarly warped.

Well over half of Mumbai's population already live in slums. The majority of Mumbaikars are therefore slum dwellers

The figures for Delhi are around 35%. Right now, one out of every three Delhi-ites lives in a slum.

Thats a startling number !! By the way, the ground situation might be totally different. I am struggling to remember a place in Delhi which has a real big slum. I mean, not talking about small uniots, like a few square kilomters, but a real large area that can be called a slum in Delhi...just like Dharavi OR Kandivali in Mumbai ?

Equally important is the infrastructure growth and which is certainly not going to keep pace with the other items

Within Delhi, slums are away from the main roads. The 'pahadi' in vasant vihar, (walk through if not done so, it is not small and it is an education, and so is the sight of people defecating and bathing at the same time in the fountain at Besant Lok at 5 am in winter), the bastis of nizamuddin, the fifty shacks hidden behind khan khanas tomb near the sewer...

Almost every locality has a hidden slum, small or large, in South Delhi. They are sometimes hidden behind trees and such, invisible from main roads.

The big bustees are supposed to be near the Yamuna, arent they?

Btw, I have read the figure of 35% in many places. This from 2002, they say the figures are growing so should be worse now, in 2008

Quote:
About 34% of Delhi's population live in slums. With continuing increase in urban population and endless flow of rural immigrants, slum population is growing very fast day by day.

------------

A government website says, bold mine

(AND, maybe the figures are higher, though this percentage below seems to include all unauthorised bustees and such, some of which may not be a typical jhuggi.....)

Quote:
The present population of Delhi is about 13.9 million*. Of this nearly 45% population lives in unauthorised colonies, rural villages and slums and JJ clusters. The current number of slum dwelling units is estimated at about 0.6 million and the population living in slums and Yamuna clusters is projected at about 3 million.

PS: On the YAP in the website, or the Yamuna Action Plan... this is being implemented ahead of the 2010 games, amidst a fair amount of opposition. Where will these people, whose jobs keep Delhi running, go?

But it is Delhi. The city of illusion. What is hidden, even an elephant, is invisible

I am surprised because I myself do not live in some top of the line area...mine is a typical lower middle class neighborhood...one of the numerous unauthorized colonies of Delhi..but still accepting that big a number for a proper 'slum' is hard for me..

(I'm prepared to specialise anywhere --- but it can be more fun in a seedier district)

I wonder what the percentage for Chennai is? We do not have huge slum areas; probably nothing bigger than the fishing-people's groups of huts, but smaller groups of such dwellings scattered around. Some people would class some of the govt. appartment blocks as slum; they certainly can be pretty grim.

What, from a foreigner's perspective, always strikes me as odd is Chennai's Foreshore Estate. This is pretty-much-central Chennai sea-side; in any other developed city in the world it would be prime land worth big bucks. Here it is a slum.

(Err... not that I want anyone to get the idea of clearing those people out...)

I think the more expensive the real estate, the bigger the slums.

In Hyderabad you see a lot of bustees- crowded and old, essentially squatted on land which has been converted into a huge area for dwelling.

But all are living in brick houses, sanitation is better than I have seen in Mumbai and Delhi...

This is not because Hyderabad is a cleaner and better city. It is just because it is cheaper for real estate. The same people would be living in a slum in Mumbai.
