People who litter at public places

I have created first post in my newly created blog. As is clear from the subject this is an issue which is neglected by many of our fellowcountrymen. But I sincerely hope that every one undestands the importance of keeping public places clean.

Here is the link to my blog.

One of our top annoyances

What we wrote in 1998:

Our top two of annoyances:

1. Babe-bumping; grownup youths walking up against western females (more than once in a while also using their hands). After 10 days Mirjam found the answer; she turned around and smacked them. This is especially effective if their friends are watching; they lose a lot of face being hit by a woman.

2. Urinating on monuments. This is another thing that really annoyed us. Any slightly dark corner of virtually all the monuments, palaces and even temples you visit smells of ammoniac. OK, it's not always possible to find a public toilet in the streets (quiet difficult to be honest), but could you please stop pissing all over your national heritage?

Somehow I cannot throw away even a tiny bus ticket after the ride is over, always wait till I get home and then throw it in the dustbin!!! But then most people in India do not care about such things and even throw larger stuff onto the roads or out of the trains onto the rail tracks and mar the beauty of the place by littering. I used to make my group of members on my astronomical field trips pick up even a small sweet wrapper from the village field we used to use to observe the night sky and if someone did not do it then I would do it myself even if I did not throw something there. Sure set an example and then they would all start picking everything up to throw in the bin at the railway station. A sense of cleanliness is the first thing that should be taught in schools but then I guess it is never taught or implimented even if taught so the child never learns the right things and also the parents teach the children the wrong things many a times so then who will take the blame finally?!!! Cleanliness is usually maintained in most houses but the dirt is thrown straight out the window or door onto the passerby without any civic sense. Hope things will change someday soon!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

Navin, Thanks for that lnt link. Will be veru much useful.
I also get irritated when people just throw waste here & there & spit on the road. When will our people have this much common sense ? I think it has to be tought to children from a much younger level.

Dhans, not only national heritage people in India Urinate at any place they find. Like place between two buildings, on any wall, on the tracks etc., One solution people have adopted is to paint or stick pictures of gods & religios gurus to stop people from urinating.

Aadil, Thanks for commenting on my post & encouraging me. I am feeling proud, you see this is first post on my blog.
I also have the same habit of not throwing bus tickets on the road. I keep the same in my pocket or in my wallet & after coming home I throw them in the dustbin. Sometimes the ticket lies in my wallet for no. of day but will never throw on the road. Even while I travel I keep collecting all the rubbish in a bag till I find a dust bin to dump the same.
It is the responsibility of parents to teach their child not to litter at public places. Because Teacher can only interact with their students for few hrs. but the child will learn all the manners from his or her surrounding i.e. Parents & relatives. Now if elders only litter here & there then children will learn the same. I also sincerely hope that it changes soon.

Growing awareness

There was a time not too long ago (till about mid-1960s or even later in rural areas) when Americans also threw everything out the car window. There was little or no environmental awareness. All this changed within one generation with a combination of television and radio ads, school programs, and govt. enforcement of substantial littering and dumping fines. (Like, $200 - and that was 20 years ago.)

Of course there are still slackers and jerks who throw stuff on the road, but it is drastically better. They used a combo of the carrot of "make your place look nicer" and the stick of "and if you don't you'll pay for it." Garbage bins were also provided liberally to make it easier. It was most difficult and is still most prevalent in the more rural areas of the US - especially the South (ashamed to say).

With more affluence, and therefore greater ability to buy nondegradable goods (pop bottles, plastic wrapped snacks etc) India will really benefit from this type of multi-pronged campaign.

Along with Campaigns the government & the municipalities have to put up dustbins at regular intervals. Sometimes I have to carry litter with me for longer times as I do not find dustbins.
Another problem is that either the dustbin or its part gets stolen or people spoil & break the same. Many times I have found dustbins are there but without cover or have no base so if you throw something in it it falls on the road.

Come on Aam Janta of India Wake up. It is for your good. This appeal is especially to all Pan & Tobacco Chewers.
