Pay by INR

Yesterday Ms. Renuka Chowdhury, Minister of Torism, India, has instructed that foreign tourists henceforth should pay their entry fees in World Heritage and Protected sites by Indian Rupee of Rs.250/- & Rs.100/- respectively in lieu of $5 & $2.It is ordered due to recent devaluation of US $ in respect of INR.

Well, fair enough is what I say. It's easier to pay in the country's currency I think - don't most people travel around with rupees? I know I do.

It costs me $15 (Rs 600) to watch a movie here in LA. I think it is still a good deal.

Govt makes foreigners pay in Rupee

The Tribune reports that foreigners in India will have to pay the entrance fee at all monuments in Indian Rupees. Under the new system the entry fee for a world heritage site will be Rs. 250/ and Rs. 100 for other monuments. Earlier this was $5 and $2 respectively.

The report further mentions that in view of the "appreciating" value of Rupee to the US Dollar this change has been made to avoid any anomaly and consequent fall in revenues

Sadly this report is not on the online edition but in the print edition.

There's no reason why tourists should not pay in local currency. It seems, to me, quite arrogant to expect anyone to accept US dollars (or any other currency) when travelling abroad - I remember once seeing some American tourists in Brussels who were outraged that a street vendor would not accept their greenbacks.

However, if the dollar were appreciating rather than depreciating I've a feeling that it would still be welcomed across India.

How much do Indian Citizens pay?

Is there a standard mark-up for tourists across all world heritage sites within India (assuming there are more than 1), or a completely arbitrary mark-up as per the tourism ministry's whim?

Why do tourists pay more anyway?

Don't get me started!

Yes, Earthling, it is an argument that we have had many times here, and neither side seems able to see the other's point of view. Suggest you do a search and take a look. A quick one will probably be enough?

I think the whole lot should be sold to Walmart.
