Philosophy over tea!! First response is very appealing.

My take, we cannot live without desires, which in extreme form are passions, but when we lose control over fulfilling the desires and they drive us, they first become habits and then addictions. If we know how to control the desires and form habits willfully then they will never become addictions - you choose rather than being led. Hardwork though!!

It's a bit short of context, but...

addiction is physical. Stuff changes in the brain/body so that the person cannot live without the object of the addiction. Maybe this is splitting hairs, maybe obsession also involves brain chemistry, but I suggest it might be more appropriate than addiction in your series.

An example:

passion = to enjoy to go to gym

habit = to go to gym regularly 4 times a week despite you sometimes do not enjoy it

addiction = to go to gym despite you got a sport injury and you know that it will be worst

I guess addiction is where you rack up 20,000+ posts in 7 years.* (I will of course not speak for those who manage 50 in 8)

* Whoops, 21, I see now Yes, well, doctor, you see, it was all about my upbringing.

It really depends on whose line it is that you might be crossing!? The law, your doctor, your spouse, a friend, a fellow consumer/user. Opinions, perceptions, benchmarks can vary by quite a bit ......

Passion: Gardening.

Habit: You got to do some Gardening daily, at a particular time.

Addiction: When I can get all your money in the bank, by simply stopping you from going to garden.

Passion: good cup of tea
Habit: tea daily at 4:00 p.m.
Addiction: headache without tea and will go/do anything to get that cup of tea OR (in my case) can't stop myself from buying a new kind of tea.

In my case, looking in my pantry and seeing 52 boxes/tins of different types of teas. Oh my! This is the first time I've counted them.

But unfortunately for a 24-year-old bachelor in India, that's exactly what has happened for the last two years whenever he tried to watch an X-rated movie.

The funny part of this is:
"... the man was advised by neurologists to take the equivalent of about 30 painkillers a half hour before turning on a video..."

I once had a friend who practiced her piano 6 hours a day. I asked her this same question, if it was a hobby/passion or an addiction.

I've asked myself the same when I sit for hours at a time on the computer, surfing the web, researching, reading India Mike posts, etc. Somehow it comes back to a sense of loneliness and/or isolation and a need to CONNECT to someone. Of course, one has to FEEL what is going on within oneself to pick up on those feelings and do something about it. I think the same can be said for porn, eating, drinking, shopping, etc. It's a convenient mask for an uncomfortable feeling deep inside, oftentimes denied.
