As someone else pointed out to me once, "There is almost never a day that I don't have at least one cup of coffee. I often go weeks without a single paan." Which one is the truly addictive drug?

The risk from tobacco is well known, avoid it. To me, I think the risk of betel nut is a bit more dubious, but it is possible to have paan without it. All in all I haven't been convinced that there is a great health risk for occasional, non-tobacco, paan consumption. Your milage may differ.

Paan is just another addictive unhealthy drug.
Well, now that someone has asked... yes, I would like to start smoking again. I see the teenagers doing it and I remember how cool it looks! Just kidding.

Besides the threat of mouth cancer, I also hear that paan is bad for your teeth, but I don't have plans on becoming a regular paan user. And I'm not doing it with tobacco. I'll take it sweet. And I do a few worse things than chewing on betel nut.

I love the metha paan in Calcutta, and usually indulge once during any visit there. In fact, it was while chewing paan that I learned to spit! I do all sorts of things in India that I'd never do at home in the USA.

Well, Proxyindian, sounds like you are aware of the problems.

I took a course of heavy pain killers recently that convinced me that Opium must be jsut wonderful! But I'll put it off until I've not got long to go anyway
