Online banking..
Does anyone have experience with onlline banking while traveling? I'm planning on traveling for 6-8 months and don't really want to carry that many travelers checks with me. I know ATM's are around the bigger cities so I'm thinking online banking might be the way to go. Suggestions? Thanks in advance for any input.

Used it on my last trip.Worked fine . Only problem was in Leh : with extremely slow connection I would sometimes be logged out automatically. The encryption device worked , even in monsoon weather.

Thank you Vistet for the info... I will definately look into it. My bank doesn't offer the service since it is a small credit union so I will have to switch banks..
Leh's internet connection was quite frustrating at times to me too. -But then I had to remind myself that a large part of the charm was the remoteness and the virtual lack of electricity. Just curious, what are your favorite memories of Ladakh? I have quite a few but the thing I remember the most right now is the overarching sky and the vastness of the landscape. It really put life into perspective for me. (Me=small dot in big landscape..) |

Alright ATMs work in India - but you gotta wonder about those Fees. People doing the europe thing always say ATMs are the best thing to do but in India, seems like it could get expensive.

Favorite moments in Ladakh... every time I am struck by the landscape, this incredible light slicing thru the eyelids. One of my favorite haunts was (no longer exists) this one-table teastall in the bakers street. Sat there a lot, once with this old tibetan and looked at pictures of my homemountains and had this wordless incredible sad moment when he thought about what he had left.
Waking up to the smell of hot buttertea a nippy january morning ; another good moment.. |

I've been doing on-line banking since arriving in India last August. It's been great. There are enough ATMs around that if you plan ahead a little there's no need to carry a ton of cash around. Also if you take money out from an ATM you'll usually get a mixture of 1000, 500 and 100 rupee notes - not the huge wad you get at the bank. The ATM fees with my bank are less than the money charged to exhange and I can pay my VISA and move money around on-line. Geez, I sound like a commerical.
