Old Lady Here

The OP really surprised me with the question. One of the things I like best about India is the bright colors on all ages! I think styles of the salwar kameez can be younger or older by the cut or choice of pants but the colors are often wonderful & bright.

As a foreigner I would not be privy to the subtle differences by location, class, religion, widows, etc. that women might feel more or less flamboyant in their dress. When I was in Kashmir I noticed the general styles were quite their own & not very colorful. Goa, also alot of westernized dress styles I didn't see elsewhere. So, I know it's not bright colors everywhere.

I love to see bright colors & I like to wear them when I'm there!

A bit off topic.... I did also notice that Indian women & many men dye their hair black well into their older years. This makes me feel really old, since I started going gray in my 30s & never dyed it!

What you've heard is not wrong (although it may not apply to all
of India). There are regional preferences. For example, older
Bengali ladies in general would not usually wear very bright colours,
(unlike what older ladies would do in the south). In fact, as women
grow older in Bengal, the social mores encourage them to move
towards lighter colours, with white base sarees (with may be
some prints, and of course, intricate borders) being very common
(I'm not talking about widows, -- that is a different subject).
Consequently you'll find an abundance of white base sarees in
Bengal markets that you'll not find in the south. The southern
preference is quite commonly noticed and commented upon.
Of course, fashion preferences are never static, and you'll see
variations on the general theme.

Believe me.... I love the bright colors and will continue to wear them even though I'm you might say "older" (at least to younger people). Is 50's older????
Bright colors can show the dust & dirt a bit more than the earthen tones. Other than that I'm not aware of a specific age* limit for adorning brighter colors. More about how those hues compliment your own skin & hair & how you carry yourself accordingly.

(*I remember there was an older lady in our neighbourhood when we were growing up that always wore very colorful clothes sometimes with a feather boa even...... & so we nicknamed her 'Polly Peacock'. I have know idea how old she was at the time or what ever became of PP but can still picture strutting down that laneway. )

my general consensus is that it's ridiculous. and I'm being diplomatic.
