"Older" women and bright colors

I've heard people talk (not positively) about older women wearing bright colors that the young girls wear. What's the general concensus on this?

In Hindi there is a saying which goes "Buddhi Ghodi Lal Lagam" meaning a heavily decorated old mare.....

People use this for old women who wear flashy makeup and clothes....

But over a period of time the perceptions and attitudes have changed a lot...and an older woman wearing brighter colors is perfectly OK.

gardener...
naaaah!!!!
havent you seen just about all ages in india wearing peacock blues, rani pinks, parrot greens, blood red sarees and salwar kameez's ?
you should see the rich colours on display, especially during weddings!!! daughters, moms and grandmoms.
widows however, wear toned down colours.

this is, i think, is a western perception somehow.
colours there are more subdued - pastel shades, no ?
correct me.

go get yourself a flaming orange blouse you wont regret it.
and most importantly - i genuinely feel its not an age thingee [perhaps a culturally different perception.]

we're not talking flashy make-up or chamak chamki stuff... the 'urban' young wannabe's.
this is about them good ole temple sarees, kanjeevarams et al.- and the colours the aam aadmi [the person on the street] don.

This comes from the mother of an Indian friend of mine! She's from a smaller town though. Perhaps the women in the bigger cities go for the bright colors?

Believe me.... I love the bright colors and will continue to wear them even though I'm you might say "older" (at least to younger people). Is 50's older????

bollocks - that is poppycock.
have you seen them southern grand dames - how wondrous they look in them rich coloured sarees.

small towns, big towns i dont know.
i have never heard of colours and the age equation.

50 is old ????
who the hell cares - its about how good you feel woman
and stick to 'em colours [perhaps you were lookin really hot, and that got to be a tad uncomfortable!]

Let me put it this way. Have you ever seen someone in your circle and you go "hmmm...isn't she too old for this sort of thing?". May be it's the lipstick, may be the dress.

That's the same context from the Indian woman. Isn't that what you'd too notice if you look at it from each other's culture?

My personal view on all this culture stuff is, we are pretty much the same all over with the context of understanding shifted a bit.

Like sarees, say. If you dont wear it everyday, any pleasing colour is fine with you as a westerner. But my mom, she weighs in her age when choosing them. So, it's plains, checks, autumn colours with not too much border. Subdued elegance is what she looks for.

Yeah, so you know it when you see it especially "appropriateness" of your friends' choices under the lens of age group.

My solo general consensus is, as usual, who cares what people think or say?

Step 1 : Hire an old horse with a red leash....ask around for a Buddhi Ghodi with Lal Lagam.
Step 2 : Borrow my wife's leopard print suit. The spots are in black, the background in gold and it has liberal smatterings of what I suspect is silver dust (btw, I hope you are 5'6" and 100 kgs+ or thereabouts else the fit would be a problem).
Step 3 : Pull on your red gloves (must have some matching shatching you see with the horse accessories), and somersault on to the horse, egg on the horse "Hey O Silver away!" and gallop off into the interiors of Rajasthan where the women would surely be more colourfully dressed.

And I'm not just horsing around.....don't pay too much attention to this colour thing.

Oh btw, yes, 50's is older

I simply love all colors of India's clothes. The woman is always more beautiful with strong colors, independing of the age. Its part of India tradition and its very sexy also
