Hi, everybody!
Would anyone like to meet in NYC sometime soon, or in the following places this summer? I leave for Calcutta, Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Bhutan in July! R.

incidentally, i was in sikkim, darjeeling and calcutta on my trip (and met quite a few folks from bhutan). i hope you're making liberal use of the sikkim and west bengal forums, which have lots of helpful information. i posted there prolifically when i first joined IM - no question's too small for this community! i'll move this and start a new thread so other new york-area folks can more easily find it.

I'll be up for a meetup. Depends on when though... I have a couple of vacation weeks coming up.

i'll be away the first week of may and memorial day week. some weekends, too. we'll figure something out that works, maybe in early june? i'll suggest jackson heights' little india as a venue again and, given our newest member's travel plans, maybe even the world famous "himalayan yak restaurant and bar," for that sikkimese mood!
rajive, excellent videos on your website. (http://www.rajiveanand.com/) i especially enjoyed seeing so many familiar sites from my own recent trip. we'll look forward to meeting you. |

I can't recommend the Yak highly enough - I've been going there since they opened. If y'all want to meet up before 5/17 I'll be there.

The Himalayan Yak Restaurant and Bar in Jackson Heights is not to be missed. There are live musicians singing Bollywood songs in Hindi (yes, I know that seems weird but better that than American soft pop hits from the 1980s). Large families fuss over their ill-behaved children. Lonely men nurse glasses of black label at the bar, and the waiters are solicitous but mostly clueless. The place has the feel of a hotel bar at the roof of the world.
A Saturday night is the best time to go to soak up the atmosphere. The food is Tibetan and Nepalese, and I dare any IndiaMiker to down a glass of yak butter tea--yes, that's black tea with a large dollop of salty yak butter. One famous travel writer pronounced it "positively noisome." |

let's try to do this before 5/17 so that giripriya can join us, shall we? merchant, do you know anything about the show schedule there, days of week, times, etc? might you inquire?
the noise level can be deafening once the music starts. would be nice to have some time to talk and get to know one another before the show gets going. let's see what the music schedule is and we can then propose a DAY of the week before we try to identify an actual date. anyone know when levi returns from india? |

How about a Basement Bhangra thingy at Sounds of Brazil? It's on a weekday, but it's supposed to be crazy fun.

I used to drink 5-6 cups of it every morning when I was teaching at a monastery school in K'du - 'Aaama' would keep pouring and she seemed upset if I refused, so I actually grew to like it...
so BRING IT!!!! The Yak makes the best Dal Bhat with Aloo Gobi I have ever had, also their Shogok Khatsa(spicy potato curry) is the best if you like piro piro khanna - it makes tears come to my eyes, it's that hot. It's also a great place to eat Gundruk(dried, fermented greens) if you've never tried it before, they marinate it in spices so it's really good. I'm veg now but I've been told their lamb curry is nice too. They also have Sekuti if you've been craving it - I wish there was a veg Sekuti, used to love that stuff!! My B-day(a big one!!) is on 5/7 so I'm in the mood to party!! |
