New World Heritage sites...

Hi all,

Unesco are in the process of naming the latest World Heritage Sites. I would just be interested to know what all of you think should be on the WHS list.
Preferrably from India (otherwise other countries)

Here is my ideas of what should be World Heritage in India

1. Jaisalmere Fort. So, unique but, so in danger.

2. The Gompas of Ladakh (not just Hemis and Alchi - which have just been added to the list). The cradle of Buddhism. Priceless everyone of them.

3. The Kanchenjunga National Park. Beautiful beyond description and in pristine condition.

4. The Sangla Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Beautiful old Kinnauri buildings, an ancient culture that appears to be in tact and some of the central western Himalayas most beautiful scenery.

5. The Victoria Memorial in Calcutta. The most evocative and impressive monument to the British Empire - it's also preserved in pristine condition by the people of Calcutta.

Everywhere else I can think of...

1. My hometown - Colchester, England. Europe's largest Norman keep, a near complete Roman Wall, archeological sites everywhere - Britain's original capital. (I am VERY biased though!)

2. Haolougou Glacier Park - Sichuan, China. There aren't too many glaciers that you can stroll on under a 7500m peak...

3. Mt Fuji, Japan. On the proviso that the Japanese clean the bloody thing up. (There are abandoned cars parked on it! I kid you not!)

4. Mt Buffalo National Park, Victoria, Australia. - Gobsmackingly beautiful.

5. The DMZ, Korea. A zone untouched by man (because of war), it has grown into a wildlife sancturary of the highest order. (Because nobody has been there.)

So, I would love to know everyone elses thoughts! PLEASE!

Take care one and all, as always,

Rob The Pom.

Just read today that Victoria Station (or CST or whatever it's called these days) in Mumbai was named as one of the sites. Didn't mention any others here though, Rob.

Yes, The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), earlier called as VT (Victoria Terminus), is listed in the UNESCO’s world heritage site list.

Be careful what you wish for. To the powers that be in India, the list of World Heritage sites is the same as the list of places that foreigners can be charged $20 US to see. Unless they start putting some of that money into actually improving the sites, I think the list should be frozen or even rolled back. As for sites outside of India - I nominate the Old Course at Troon (with a special plaque commemorating the spot where Greg Norman hit the clubhouse and lost the Open).

I only wish Bangalore had given a thought to the bungalows that seem to have been clearcut like redwoods as the city rushed headlong into the future
