I completely agree.

You can easily get to version 1, the old format, by using the address below:

There will be a momentary flash of the version 2 banner, but if you give it a moment the familiar version 1 will come up.
Walt Whitman - Song of Myself

Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

Ditto !

I also think IM is more of a bandwidth hog now. For e.g. "Mobile Clicks" thread, some times I feel every pic is being downloaded (I might be wrong).

Some of us have slow/metered connections.

Still working on the experiment ... ! It's not ready for full public consumption. Please click on www.indiamike.com/v1 to go back to the original site.

If / when we decide to go full-on with the experiment, we will be revamping the v2 homepage to be more user friendly like the old site was.

Are you viewing the site from the v2 look-and-feel? In order to make the scrolling smoother, we pre-load the images before the page loads. I can change it so that it doesn't preload as many images if you're on a lower bandwidth connection.
It's always darkest before it goes completely black.

Yes, I was referring to viewing threads with V2.

I doubt anyone would like to have all pics in a thread pre-loaded. A thread like 'Mobile Clicks' will have a 10s of MBs of pics.

Hi all ... I want to discuss with the larger group an experiment I've been working on behind the scenes, which I'm calling the India Mike v2 experiment. The experiment tests out some new technology concepts and creatives to see if we can improve the IM experience. It is meant to be a "secret" test on new visitors to the site, but some of the returning members have stumbled onto it as well.

NOTE: If you're seeing the new look-and-feel experiment and you don't like it, please click on www.indiamike.com/v1 and you will be sent back to the original layout.

First off ... some tech stuff: The new look-and-feel is only being shown to a small percentage of visitors who have never been to IM before (based on whether you've been "cookied" or not). If you come into the site after clearing your browser cookies and cache, or in "incognito" mode, there is a chance you'll be put into the experiment.

The reason for the experiment is that traffic and participation on India Mike has been on a decline, and the site needs to be updated. For example, over the past 2-3 years, traffic from mobile devices has increased to where it is the dominant channel. The current UI / UX and content categorization is not built for mobile, and therefore needs to be revamped.

So there are a few things that we're currently testing with the v2 experiment:
- Page-less scrolling on the thread pages, so for long threads you don't need to hit "next" and "prev".
- Recommended content at the end of thread pages, i.e. attempting to show more relevant content at the end of posts.
- "Dashboard" app content concept on the homepage, where you're shown different types of content in a Pinterest-type UI. This is meant to be an "explore India Mike" type page, where IM will in the future tailor the content based on your interests.

Here are some things we have in the works that we will be testing within the next 2-3 weeks:
- New WYSIWYG editor on the thread pages with better editing capabilities, so you can format your posts better.
- Upgraded photo-upload feature on thread pages, so it's easier to upload images from your desktop or your mobile device directly onto the site.
- Common image gallery across attachments and images, so you can easily reference previously uploaded images when posting.
- "Save Draft" feature when posting, so you can come work on a long post over several days before publishing it to the site.

So far the experiment is going fairly well for new visitors. I'm seeing an increase in registrations and in time spent on site. We have a crap load more work to do before making the decision as to whether v2 is really working or not, and before we roll it out to the rest of the folks, but the initial results look promising. I'll keep you updated on progress.

If you want to check out the experiment click on: www.indiamike.com/v2
To exit the experiment click on: www.indiamike.com/v1

I'd love to hear your thoughts, but please keep in mind that this is very much a work in progress.

To be more specific, we pre-load about 1-2 pages worth of images at a time, not all the images in the thread.
