New Indian telephone numbers

It seems that telephone numbers for some major Indian cities have changed. For Delhi the numbers are now 8 digit beginning with 2. Perhaps one of the Indian members on the forum could list the other changes?

Quite right Alan. The same is true for Mumbai (Bombay), Chennai (Madras), Hyderabad and some other cities. For these places, prefix a '2' to the seven digit phone number - this is the new 8 digit number.
Bangalore is still on seven digits, without the '2' prefix.

It looks like all telephone numbers in India will be ten digit, including the city (area) code. So cities with a two digit city code, the 0 at the beginning does not count, (Delhi, Mumbai, etc.) will have eight digits, cities that have a three digit code (Jaipur has 141) will have a seven digit phone number.

All telephone numbers that used the Government provider, (BSNL, MTNL etc) will begin with a 2 throughout the country. Other service providers have been assigned another digit (in Jaipur the other provider Shyam Telecom, has numbers beginning with 5) but they too will be such that along with the city code they will add up to ten.

Those used to the US numbers will undestand at once what this is all about!
