NATIONAL ANTHEM OF INDIA

Composed by Rabindranath Tagore, the song Jana Gana Mana was first sung on December 27, 1911 at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. On January 24, 1950, the Constituent Assembly adopted the song as the National Anthem of India. The complete song consists of five stanzas.
Only the first of the five stanzas was designated as the anthem.
The anthem goes:

Jaana Gaana Maana Adhinayaka Jayehe
Bharata bhagya vidhata;
Punjaba Sindhu Gujarata Maratha,
Dravida Utkala Banga,
Vindhya, Himachala, Jamuna, Ganga,
Ucchhala Jaladhitaranga;
Taba Shubha Naame Jaage
Taba Shubha Ashish Maage
Gaye taba jaya gaatha.
Jaana Gaana Maana Adhinayaka Jayahe
Bharata bhagya vidhata;
Jaya he Jaye he
Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya he.

The English rendition of the song goes like this

Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
Dispenser of India's destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of the Punjab,
Sind, Gujarat, and Maratha,
Of the Dravid, and Orissa and Bengal.
It echoes in the hills of Vindhyas and,
Himalayas, mingles in the music of the
Jamuna and the Ganges and is chanted by
the waves of the Indian sea.
The pray for the blessings,
and sing by the praise,
The saving of all people
waits in thy hand.
Thou dispenser of India's destiny,
Victory, victory, victory to thee.

Please note that " Vandemataram " as mentioned by pkalra in post above is not Indian National Anthem but NATIONAL SONG composed by Bankim Chandra .This song appear in his famous Bengali novel " Ananda Math "

The national anthem of India is the song Jana Gana Mana by Rabindranath Tagore, and not Vande Mataram .

This is indeed a great thing that two country has choosen the same poets song as their national anthem.
The great poet has written this not for Bangladesh only .This song was writen by the poet for undivided Bengal. Later on Bangladesh Govt has chosen it as their National Anthem.

"Aey sarzameen-i-pak Zarrey terey hein aaj sitaron sey tabnak Roshan heh kehkashan sey kahin aaj teri khak."

(Oh land of Pakistan, each particle of yours is being illuminated by stars. Even your dust has been brightened like a rainbow)

The first National Anthem of Pakistan was written by Jagannath Azad, Hindu poet from Lahore on the advice of Jinnah, the father of Pakistani nation.

Later after Jinnah’s death their national anthem was changed and the present one was introduced.

Our history was full of twists and turns….

India's most cherished song Saare Jahan Se Achcha (almost an alternative anthem) was written by Dr. Allama Iqbal...Pakistan's national poet...also from Lahore.

Lala Hardayal was his student, who formed the Gadar Party in the uS. It was at a meeting organized by the party that Dr Iqbal first sang the song. Simple and alluring, the song became a rallying point for freedom fighters.

hi, ms

nowadays i think they are abt 12 percent and during independance, i think it was abt 20 percent or slightly more, so still a minority.

while that wouldn't be weird in india, other predomonantly muslim countries usually don't allow much influence from the non-muslim minority.
in fact, that's why only half of hindus left bangladesh after partition, compared to most that left pakistan, where it seems islam is more hard-line.

Heya Zen

Ahh thanks for the info, Upaguru, one can learn something everywhere.

Anywho, thanks man, i don't know much about Bengladesh and I can understand what you mean by a preodminatly Muslim country letting and keeping a poem/song by Tagore as thier national anthem. And you are also right on the point that....boy Tagore was a savant phenom.

Take care frined.

Small mistake: The italicized line should read:

jana gana mangala daayaka jaya he

Also your "jaana gaana maana" should read as "jana gana mana" [ the meaning is quite different ]. In other places where there should be an "aa" you have written an "a" [ e.g. adhinaayaka ; bhaarata ; bhaagya ; vidhaataa [expln for the non Indian speakers: The "a" sound is pronounced as in "mud", "gum", "bum" whereas the "aa" sound is pronounced as "father", "rather", aaaah ]

It is well known that taba of Bengaali Bhaashaa is pronounced as tava in the rest of multi lingual India. The original in sanskrit contains a "v". Then why not bidhaataa for vidhaataa? Why not bindhya for vindhya? [ here the correct "v" is written instead of the Bengaali "b" sound. ]

I don't mean to be rude because I do not know Bengaali. I was under the impression that all "v"s in Sanskrit automatically become "b"s in Bengaali. Even the word Banga is actually Vanga in Sanskrit. Why did you spare the "V" in "V"idhaataa and write it in the correct Sanskrit form? This will help me know the changes of sounds as in phonetics. For example: all the "a" sounds in the rest of India are pronounced as "o" sounds in Banga Bhaashaa. [for example the famous sweet rosogullaa instead of rasagullaa] Are there some exceptions here too? [ where the "a" is pronounced as an "a" instead of the Banga sound "o" ]

Anyway, here is the whole anthem in devanaagarii script as is sung in Delhi in both the houses of Parliament ....

Jai Hind!

While we read writings of Tagore we never think about his religion. He is asset of Bengoli nation, that's all.
