Namaste - THEN what do I say....?
Any advice from seasoned travellers on what are the best Hindi phrases to learn to get around? I already know Acha, Nahee and Challoe. What's next? What about things like How are you, how much is this, why did the hotel burn down, etc etc?
Any help appreciated, Acha. |

Try this site http://anglahindi.iitk.ac.in/index2.html
It isn't a great transaltor. But it's the best there is online. This rough guide (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...884787-4729453) is great to learn Hindi conversation. Hope these links help. If not send me an email with phrases you want to translate and I'll send you back the translation. ![]() |

Emmar01, a very useful phrase is
"Sehi keemat kya hai?" which roughly translated means "What's the real price?" Said with a worldly wise smile this generally brings the price down with auto rickshaw drivers and others if you think they are asking an over the top rate.

here's some useful phrases which will come in handy :
namaste , aap kaise ho ? : Hello , How are you . Aapka Naam kya hai ? : What's ur name ? Yeh bus /train kahan jaata hai : Where does this bus/train go ? Also there is this intresting thingy . In hindi one never says i'm going . It's always "I'll come back " --- in hindi it is "aata hoon" . |

"shukria" or "dhanyabad" -- one is Urdu and one Hindi, but I don't know which is which. Both seem to work just fine.

My personal favourite way of thanking I first saw in Ladakh : bringing the received gift to lightly touch one`s own forehead. Beatiful gesture. |

Shukriya is Urdu (from the Arab Shukran, but possibly Persian also) and Dhonyabad is Hindi, Nepali and Bengali. I'm not too good at Hindi but I speak passable Bengali - so if you need to know any Bengali then give me a shout.

When I was in Delhi, one indian guy said to me that some tourists travel through India with such vocabulary:
Chillum-chapati-Challoe-Parvati :-)))) (looks like motto) :-)) |

Here's a link that supplies some of the basics for many languages:
Travellang.com Just find the India flag (text=Hindi) and click. Beware: there are quite a few annoying pop-ups, but I'm using google's beta toolbar with free pop-up stopper!! Google's beta toolbar with pop-up stopper (It's free!!) |
