Talking Must Sees

Hi all -

This is my first post - I will be taking off on my first trip to India on February 20 and am very excited! 2 weeks in Sri lanka first, then flying into Trivandrum then trying to fit as much of India in as possible for 9 weeks before heading out of Delhi and back to Oz.

Just wanted to say thankyou for all the amazing information - it has been so helpful to read of your experiences and your insights. I am feeling much more relaxed about the trip.

What are your MUST SEES? Of course the Taj is up there but I am wondering what the most memorable and special places in India were for you?

thanks freemanx.

Varanasi is absolutely on the list - do you think 3 days in long enough?

Hadn't planned on Diu - looks beautiful though.

If you're going right up North, anywhere high in the mountains is worth a look, especially for us Aussies (our tallest mountain is 2469m above sea level, India's is apparently 8598m). Views from Shimla, Dalhousie and McLeod Ganj are absolutely incredible and at that time of year the weather should be very pleasant

Ajanta.

The temples of the south, with the enthusiastically-painted figures on the gopurams.

Bodh Gaya.

Varanasi.

The sunsets off West Coast beaches.

The Jain temple at Mt. Abu.

The Golden Temple.

Calcutta.

The people of Rajasthan.

Welcome ant.

Hi ant,
Varanasi is rightly in your must see list. If you have time, please visit the given links to justify your three days at Varanasi. My personal opinion is if you do not visit “Ramnagar” and Saranath, Varanasi tour is incomplete.

Wow - thanks so much for the info.

Guerik - I am definitely planning on heading north to Shimla and Manali and wanted to do a 3 or 4 day trek. has anyone done any short treks in early may and which ones would you recommend?

Kolkata? why on earth would you send someone there on their first trip to India, especially when they're flying outa Delhi? second or third, I'd agree . . . . or are you personally prepared to show them around . . .
