When I discovered IndiaMike, I was already on "gardening leave," needing to be available to take phone calls, but only doing so for about an hour a month --- happiest days of my working life! Then I turned redundancy into retirement, and the computer, which had been something I left behind in the office and never used at home, became my prime point of contact with the outside world. Without work to get in the way.

Hey, my posts are still only 3.46% of the IndiaMike forum. The .46 are the useful ones .

For posting on Indiamike, certainly it is!

But I'm sure there are bigger forums with bigger top posters, and I'm sure there are people on Twitter and Facebook that make my entire internet time look like nothng. Well... I certainly hope so!

Thank you Hembrom

Shall I try for 100,000 by the end of the year?

Don't worry, folks... December is the time that I get a life, get out there on the street, and into various halls for concert after concert. Even at 9.00am, when all decent neighsayers are fast asleep

Sorry, too busy going for music!

Actually, I am taking some holiday during the music season (December) and will only have mobile internet connection. Whilst access to calenders, schedule websites etc will be important (hope it works!) I always regard holidays as minimum-internet times.

What you are saying is when you are home it is work and when you go out to music concerts it is holidays? ..
.
.
Can you explain this December music concert season in detail please. Does this happen only in Chennai? Why at 9AM, I thought concerts happen in the evenings. Why is it everybody wants to sing in December? Is it celebration of winter in Madras? Lucky you, I always wanted to attend those concerts.

Is it all Thyagaraja kritis or Carnatic music in general.

Do you get to see big league singers like Sudha Raghunathan, Aruna Sayeeram etc., ?

I like Sudha's teeth . There is a bobblehead white guy right behind Sudha, do you know that fellow?

Don't tell me it is you.

He is fair, not "white". If you examined his head closely, he thinks in Tamil, not Cornish.

I'm spending a couple of weeks in December away from my home, at a guest house, so I can walk to places, especially in the morning, rather than drive. I have not been away this year at all, so this is my "2014 holiday," even though I am only going about 10km away!

Nope. I doubt that anyone can!

An unknown number of organisations independently present an unknown, and uncoordinated, number of concerts, dance performances and lecture demonstrations. People have guessed that there may be as many as 3,000 or more. Almost all the morning and early afternoon events are free.

It is really Margazhi, the Tamil month running from mid-December to mid-January, but most call it The December Season. In practice, it has no real beginning or end. There is no opening or closing. It reaches in to Novemember and touches as far as February. The Music Academy has its "Music Season" during last two weeks of December, and its "Dance Season" in the first week of January.

Chennai's December Music Season happens only in Chennai + suburbs.

There are barely enough hours in the day, let alone the evening! Lec-dems start as early as 8.00am, concerts start by 9.00am. One sabha starts at 5.30, but this is as much a puja as a concert: the artists performs to the god, and a few early risers go to watch. I went once, and then went home to bed.

There is a certain sense of recognition in getting to sing in "the season," especially at prestigious sabbhas, and most especially at The Music Academy.

It is peak holiday season for NRIs, pios and foreigners. The English-summer-day-like mid-winter is as comfortable as it ever gets here for them, and their (mine once ) office holidays at Christmas and New Year make for economical annual-holiday usage.

Sadly, most foreign tourists pass through the city completely unaware of the musuc

For just watching music, I really prefer the low-pressure rest of the year, but for the buzz and social life, it is incomparable. Great fun!

All Carnatic music, a small of amount of Hindustani, and a smattering of other things.

Certainly, ...if you want to! And if you can get the tickets I think that both those people are performing at the MA this year. You'd have to have a season ticket or queue up at the crack of dawn for the day tickets to go on sale.

No. And No. This is Thyagarajah Aradhana, I guess the broadcast is from Thiruvaiyaru. I know the ghatam player. And I know the guy who uploaded the video, or, at least, I've met him a couple of times.

I've never been to Thiruvaiyaru. It's quite a big audience: I bet there is someone there that I know, it's a small musical world.

This is my cup of tea..

And I know all the people on that stage --- although they look a little older now. As do I!

Here is the same singer, at the Music Academy, last year. And that's me
