got the answer HA: I mailed myself several books on the 5 March from Delhi to London. Weighted may be 2 kg. Carefully wrapped. Cost me Rs 600, ordinary mail (apparently there is a thing called Speedpost also) Arrived this morning (13 March) but the package was open and had to be tied with a string and put into a plastic bag. I don't mind all books are still there, there was nothing else, but I wouldn't send anything that I do not want to lose ![]()

Customs in the UK do random parcel checks, and this could explain why the parcel was opened/tampered with. Books are zero rated in the UK so will not attract any customs/excise duty. http://www.indiapost.org/ is a useful site.

Slow mail alternative : the four kilo package shown here cost Rs 140 and took about 10 weeks to Sweden. If i remember it right airmail shold have cost Rs 1100. I paid the tailor RS 25 for the package with the required inspection slit. There is also an option where the parcel is distributed as standard mail within India and the recipient country but as airmail country to country. A lot cheaper than airmail with almost the the same speed. Never used it myself , but it have been praised here earlier. I buy books from an Indian bookstore from time to time ; the books typically arrive seven to eight days after placing my order.

I wasn't even told that the package would go by airmail (apparently I did). I simply asked for "regular mail" and was told to pay Rs 600 (thought it was a bit expensive). what is that "Slowly down the Ganges" on your bookshelf - any good? Volga
