Thank you lostinasaia, I thoroughly enjoyed reading all your posts/threads. You've settled my mind alot. I'm not one to be too shocked & was worrying that I might just be in India. It would seem there is alot of hype about India. I really look forward to seeing & experiencing it all for myself instead of constantly living it thru everyone here on IM.
Thanks Again. Are you going back?????????? |

Yeah, actually I'm going back next week (February 10th, 2007)--two years after the trip described above. Last time was Varanasi and Rajasthan; this time it's two weeks going from Bangalore to, uh, as far as we get through Kerala in two weeks. All I know is we fly out of Mumbai at the end; maybe we'll fly to Mumbai from Kochi, maybe from Trivandrum. Tentatively the route's Bangalore / Belur & Halebid / Mysore / Wayanad / Calicut / Thrissur / Kochi / Backwaters / ? a beach? / home via Mumbai.
I find it amusing that a question I fielded in the Karnataka forum somehow gets my inbox filled with replies to posts from two years ago! Thanks for bumping these actually; I re-read my packing stuff and hastily added a couple of things to my list. I guess I should at least pay attention to my own advice. |

What a laugh. Just had a look & yes, sure enough it dates back to 2005.
I still found it very interesting 2 yearold or not. Enjoy your next trip. I'd love to do Kerala etc too but were sticking to the North. You can only squeeze in so much per trip. I really am hoping to be one of those that falls in love with India & has to go back again. I'll look out for your NEW reports!!! |

Very interesting read... great observations. And of course always interesting how different people have totally different experiences in the same places. I am sitting in Varanasi at the moment and the whole place seems just totally medieval and mesmorising. Beggars, touts and naked sadhus by the bucket load, and everyone cooking on the ghats (there must be 10,000 people camping on the ghats here right now - all coming in from the Kumbha Mela..), cow dung fires, beautiful boat rides and some of the friendliest people I have ever met anywhere. I guess I never think about getting ripped off - at least in the past 10 weeks travelling never have felt ripped off once, so are happy to cruise along, and hand over the rupees if the times have been good.
On another note, HIGHLY recommend the Sahi Riverview Guesthouse on Assi Ghat - lovely quiet, clean, homely, friendly, rooms from Rs300 to Rs900 per night - great value. Cheers. Dil |
