Leaving for India- Any Tips?
Over the past month I've been viewing this site regularly. I have to say it certainly beats LP! I leave for India next week for an 18 day tour, mainly thru Rajasthan. Many of the places we plan to see are not adressed on the forum, but I hope to give feedback on our return. We do have an Indian travel agent who has booked our hotels and arranged a car/driver, but any tips you have will be greatly appeciated!

Well I am far from an sort of expert on Rajasthan, but I can say that much of the fun in traveling around (there or anywhere!) is in finding all sorts of things you like that are never listed in any guidebook or even on the Internet.
On my first trip to India I thought that what people call a "very touristy place" in India was quite relative -- for me that meant seeing just a few other Westerners a day, because I was staying exclusively with Indian families. But that just made the trip all that much more special. Even though you have only 18 days, I would recommend that you don't overdo it and travel around too much as it's easy to get worn out. Pick a few places lik and stay there a 3-5 days so that you can really enjoy your epxience. Hope you enjoy your trip, if it's your first voyage to a developing country you're in for a real overwhelming treat. |

Relax and go with the flow. Be prepared to jettison your itinerary and explore some things more fully. Not everyone is out to scam you--most Indians are open and generous, so not every offer should be seen as a subterfuge. Drink lots of bottled water since dehydration can be debilitating. Eat the food you are given.
