To me there is nothing more fun than getting to know a people by learning some of their language.
Does anyone have experience with learning Hindi? I used the "Teach Yourself" series before my January trip, but would like to do some kind of real language program in January 07 when I return. Can someone review the Bhasha Baharati school in Varanasi? What about home stays? The hill station schools are closed in January. PS there Indiamike, I posted! |

The best and by far the most stressful is Berlitz one on one instruction. However, many people claim to be a teacher without the knowledge of instruction..

Learning Hindi
I know what you mean. I am in a field where there are many who can do but can't teach and try anyhow. It creates a total mess.
There is no Berlitz in India. I just checked, and the closest is Karachi, Pakistan. Can you share something else? I am looking for an onsite language experience like I had in Kyoto and Munich. Indian trains and markets wee so much fun for trying out Hindi, but I am looking for something more formal in order to make a project of it. |

Forget online resources. Catch a teacher in Hindi for part time lessons.

Waht about the famous Landour school in Mussourrie? My husband and I spent 6 weeks last June/July (04) at the Himalaya Hindi House also in Utteranchal at the language institute run by Professor Yogendra Yadav. He is an amazing teacher and my husband who is an American and only a beginner/intermediate made huge strides. He has graduated to reading pulp fiction in Hindi. At present working on Harry Potter in Hindi as well. Unfortunately I am not sure Yadavji is up for taking beginners. You might contact him via his website and look into it. landour is highly recommended and may be on web as well.

Learning Hindi
Thanks mriduus. Himalaya Hindi House looks great, but I guess Yadavji has to return to Australia for his academic year. Right now I can only do January because I spend my summers teachng in the American Rockies, same drill, different mountains. Maybe in my own retirement I can do a summer in the Himalayas. I will most certainly remember your high recommendation and dream...
I would still like to know if anyone can give a review of the Bhasha Baharati school in Varanasi. It is listed in Lonely Planet, but I know from experience that a mere listing tells nothing of its quality. |
