JGV - HHH is affiliated with ANU and Sydney Uni, if you've got any inclination to put the course towards a degree it can help.

I've got one that I'd recommend and one that I wouldn't - I'll give you the details of both once I've had a chance to have a look at them at home

I have a soft spot for Landour too. Was going to try Bhasa Bharati in Varanasi, but couldn't handle Varanasi (heard good things about them though).

Laksmi Bhabi, if you can wait, there are lots of choices in Mussoorie for dictionaries, and they're much cheaper too.

I checked out that link - I stayed at Dev Dar Woods. There is a grocery very nearby that sells homemade jam and - shocking! - homemade cookies, bread, and cheese!

Mandsaur, could you elaborate more on what good things you have heard about Bhasha Bharati? I will be in India January of '07 when the other schools are closed and have not found any other options. Have also not found a real review of Bhasha Bharati. You can homestay at the school. Does anyone know what it is like? How about the instruction?

Only second-hand reports that their teaching method is good and they're very flexible on length of stay. I think most of the others (like Landour and HHH) are minimum 5 to 6 week courses, but BB has from 1 week to 6 month options.

Another one to consider if you want to go to the south is Vijnana Kala Vedi in Kerala. They offer much more than Hindi courses (including lots of South Indian dance and music courses) and have many positive comments from visitors on their site. I'd be very curious to hear an IMer's first hand experience with them...

You can stay as long as you want in Landour.

Learning Hindi in Bangalore

Hi - I have contacted one guy in Bangalore that I hope to take a few lessons with ... unless they are crazy expensive (I am not sure of the price yet). He can arrange private lessons at your home if you are interested, but I think he has a school too.
Gyanendra Kumar

This is his teacher profile:

If you want somewhere other than Bangalore try to do a search on this website they have quite a few options
www.language-school-teachers.com

Also, you can always try ask a grad student from a local university who might specialize either in language studies or education. Though I do not know of any good humanities/language programs in south India.

Hope this helps!
