Learning Hindi / Hindi Language Schools

I would like to take a language course in the Hindi language during my coming stay in India. However I have been trying to find language schools all over the country, without any luck and I am desperate to find one! Preferably in Goa or Mumbai if possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions where to look, or perhaps name of any school?

There were a couple of threads here on Hindi language courses but I can't find them. Try the search engine here. There's a language school in Mussoorie that's very well known and it goes all year round but Mussoorie is in the Himalayas. Otherwise I don't know.

Goa and Mumbai aren't in Hindi speaking states so it would be harder to find a Hindi teacher there.
Hindi's mainly spoken in the North, this website gives you a bit of background about who speaks what and where, in India.

Other than Musoorie (which apparently has a pretty good reputation), another place that I've heard of foreigners studying Hindi is Varanasi. There's a Hindu University there which offers part-time classes.

I agree with guerik...Mumbai and and Goa are the last places you should want to learn Hindi...which incidentally is not a difficult language to learn...at least once you've mastered the alphabet..the words are pronounced exactly as they are spelt.....Mussorie is a great place to study it and you would make enough friends who winter in Goa...lots of international people and students there.....

Yes mala that IS Bambaiyyaa Hindi as spoken by the ricksha wallahs and the hoi polloi. Don't forget that Mumbai has a considerable "educated" North Indian Hindi spkg popln. incldng the well known Amitabh Bachhan and family. Also ppl in Univ's speak fairly shuddha Hindi.

The only diffrnce being, Hindi tuitions would be more expensive in Mumbai, as it is a generally expensive city to live in. Teaching available. Is there ANYTHING not available in Mumbai ??

I appreciate all the comprehensive replies! I actually knew Hindi is not the local language in either Goa or Mumbai, but I was hoping there would be a school somewhere that taught the Hindi language.

Perhaps it would be advisable once I arrive in India I try to get in touch with a local language school instead of trying to booking a language course from my home country. What do you think?

Regarding Kendriya Hindi Sanstha and the Hindi Universities, do they have webpages on the internet? I did a few search on the internet with no luck (perhaps I'm bad at internet ) ).

Here's a link for the Landour Language School (Mussoorie). I have a few others bookmarked on my home PC (I'm at work) and will update this post when I get home.

This link might also be of use - it's a list of Hindi teachers in various towns and cities across India, if you really don't want to come up north there are a few teachers advertised for Mumbai etc.

I can't say enough good things about Landour! It was such a beautiful setting, and the teachers were great - see if you can get Sharma-ji.

I'll be learning with these guys in Jan/Feb 05, by all accounts they're pretty good. They host the ANU (Australian National University) course each summer and Yogendra (the main tutor/owner) used to be a Hindi lecturer at ANU too.

I almost figured that out, but I didn't understand a word of it, only what the name of the school was!

Here's the translation :
