Large knife
Anyone carry a large knife (e.g. Kukri) for protection and as utility knife while travelling in India?
Posted this @LP a few days ago then a thread says not all members go there. Sorry for crossposting. |

well, if I was the real Laloo, I'd have a few bodyguards along as well.
I carry a little pocket knife, but it's mainly used for preparing pineapple and the like -- I bring an Uzie for protection j/k ![]() |

No, who's Rabri? Can you provide a link?
-m2- .... I have a photo of myself with an AK47 from when we got in to the tribal areas near Peshawar and sat by the river with some bodyguard types. I think it was an AK47 anyway...I'm not too up on gun types...some sort of machine gun thingy. |

Welcome, lalooprasadyadav sir, to this humble website. I'm surprised you can find the time, what with the almost insurmountable problems facing the state of Bihar.
As for Rabri, we will take your word for it. Your question. I carry a Swiss Army Knife which has many useful bits and pieces - bottle and can openers, nail file, scissors, pliers and sawblade as well as other bits, the purpose of which I haven't yet worked out. As for protection, in about three years spent travelling over many parts of India, I have never felt threatened, but then I believe (possibly mistakenly) that the pen is mightier than the sword. |

Hmm, I agree there's humor here, but...
Somebody impersonating a political figure? ![]() I thought you were in jail... or did you escape and go to the UK? Bihar politics are not terribly mainstream these days, but I remember something from a few years back. Are you your wife's "advisor"? Jayalalithaa has done very well ($$$) without her "husband". ![]() |

Laloo's quite a national celebrity these days, hobnobbing with Bollywood stars and the like when he's not it jail -- there was talk of a movie about him. His rather unworldly wife, Rabri, fills in as chief minister when he is in jail.
I think Jaya is my favorite Indian politician -- though there are indeed a lot of real slime-balls, she is literally 'larger than life' -- campaigning with huge movie poster likenesses (she was a big star at one time), tremendous excesses in her personal and political life, the mysterious woman friend, the vendettas. The last pictures I saw of her she looks to be over 200kg -- she was sitting in what must have been a specially-built chair (wide) wearing a tent-like sari. A guy sitting beside her on a similar chair looked like a midget ![]() I highly recommend the Indian weeklies (India Today, Frontline, etc) to keep up with the political scene -- they are only 15rp, and a pretty good read for train rides etc. |

I carried a hunter, basically a thin Bowie. But, I travelled in unusual surroundings, villages and sometimes the local organized crime haunts (contacts). Didn't need it but once and it served to defuse the situation neatly. Lost it 2 trips back..

I already answered you about folder knives on LP TT But since you are still at it, here are my recommendations:
Guhrka Kukri from ColdSteel, chops heads like no other. LTC Kukri, lighter for faster combat action. The ColdSteel Kukris are infinitely better than the stuff you can find in India or Nepal. Take kare in Kathmandu, they offer nickel versions that look good but the blade is... nickel, not steel. For heavy duty, consider Machetes or even Two Handed Machetes, Imagine the impression you will produce entering an Indian village with those! And if you don't like any of these, why not try some other Specialty Items, maybe a "BAD AXE" or a Tomahawk? The "SPECIAL FORCES SHOVEL" is my favorite, it doesn't look conspicuous but can be sharpened on all sides and serve as a bettle axe. I would have recommended you a High Performance Spear, but it may not be allowed by customs. ![]()
