knife

It's OK to make fun of me for this post as long as you answer my question when you're done laughing. When I do these wilderness trips I wear a sheath knife, while this knife does make me feel macho and protected it is also a utensil I use constantly, when you see me on the side of the road in India I will no doubt be stretched out on the bike, leaning against the backpack with me feet up on the handlebars eating off chunks of salami an cheese. As one example, this knife will cut the salami.

Will I be considered out of place and disrespectful in India for wearing this knife,

I don't wear it in the city I keep it in my tank pack, but when I hit remote areas I do wear it.

Any impressions or advice, if India has beautiful workmanship I will probably buy an Indian knife.

A Leatherman-type multi-tool is a lot more useful and is relatively inconspicuous in a pouch on your belt. (the one I use is made by Gerber, but same sort of thing)

It is possible to buy some beutifull knives in India. You have the hill peaples knives found in the himalayers.Ornate and good. Nepales Ghurka knives (kucri, bad spelling) to be found all over India.Sikh knives to be found in the punjab, very good antique knives with hammered steel blades. Also look in Rajastarn, they do some very good hammered steel blades.Barter hard.
A good knife is a handy tool with a multitude of uses but out of respect for other human beings.i find it is better if kept concealed. Check out some of the old Raj knives .Excelent workmanship.
I have seen fishermen not carying a knive so therefore assumend that there were laws against,so better kept consealed

Better a conceiled pocket knife with a pocket clip, like Spyderco Endura , Gerber E-Z Out and the like.

if you do forget it, it will be confiscated, held in the safe in the cockpit and returned to you after you clear customs etc at your destination.

i was sitting in the departure lounge at delhi in sight of the security check and was amazed at the number and size of knives removed from passengers.

Very true and it is illegal to carry a knife on your person unless it is a small Victorinox type.

If the blade is over 4" you can get into serious trouble. You might have problems bringing it into the country. I have seen a stupid American guy get fined $900US at Mumbai airport a few months ago after the customs confiscated his survival knife. It's not worth the hassle and a knife is not really necessary.
