Jeeps in India

Tell me about them. Are they all old? Why? And if jeep is the best vehicle for runnin' the himilaya's, then why don't we hear more about them other than 'rent me an my driver'

Does anyone own one?

Are they common? Are they actual Jeeps or a british version of a 4wd goat?

Don't get a white one for God's sake. We stole it from a friend who had just won a prestigious award (Mag....or whatever). Actually, he wanted us to borrow it. He just couldn't get himself to say yes instead of no. It was a real Indian government surplus jeep. When we hit the villages all males ran to the bushes. Finding it of no use we returned it. It was surplus from the government involuntary sterilization program which is why he had never had a big problem with theft..

Jeeps are common, mostly in rural areas. In cities you find the jazzed up version owned by rich kids.

Jeep is not a brand name in india, it is the category of the vehicle itself . most Jeeps are made by Mahindra & Mahindra. solid workhorses.

Rugged, reliable. gives your body a real workover. Carries 18-20 people in villages. See it to believe it.

Interesting to drive. Goes to the left of the road and then to the right of the road, till you realise that you have to keep on adjusting the steering wheel to keep it on a straight line. typically 3 forward gears and a reverse. noisy diesel. Petrol version is more or less extinct ( willys - that was a fun machine ). The orginal one with a soft top had little protection from weather. But you get hard-top versions and even ones with air conditioning.

Basic instrumentation in the dash board. Good view from the drivers seat. decent ride in the front row, very bumpy in the back row.

IMO the best option if you are planning to go around bad unsurfaced country/jungle roads. Will leave cars far behind under these conditions.

You will find Jeeps put to good use as people transport, and goods transport as well. Traditional police vehicle in india, but now replaced by faster & more comfortable qualises, taveras and sumos.

Let me tell you again - a real fun vehicle to drive since it keeps you so engaged.

Not recommended for a 1000 km trip thro highways though.

The reason they are used in the mountains is - they have unusually high road clearance and can be a good off roader. And you can find people to fix it even i remote areas if something goes wrong.

But they are very painful to drive, painful to sit in.

She's Mahindra and she's not 4 WD. Look at the Registration Number Plate. Its old registration number, i.e., this vehicle was registered before 1991. No one was making 4 WD jeeps in India that time.

If you're genuinely going off road, then you need a Land Rover. If you want a reliable rugged car with comfort you need a Toyota Land Cruiser. All others are imitations.

Yes they were. In the 1980s a friend had a ex army Mahindra which had 4x4.

By and large most the Mahindra Jeeps you see will not be 4x4. Many owners get the original engines changed and as part of this the 4x4 system is usually removed.
