If possible bring Euros. I got a paltry Rs. 43.30 per USD at Thomas Cook the other day while the market rate is in the region of 45.35. You wouldn't need to declare $5000 at customs but converting at least $3000 officially if your stay exceeds 3 months and keeping the receipts till departure will help you with railway bookings, hotel reservations etc. A combination of both cash and TCs (a Visa card obviosuly a plus) is what most tourists bring in.
