Is New Delhi Prepared for Commonwealth Games ?

Common Wealth games is the main focus of this thread. We have got only 2 years in our hands and given the developemnts taken place within past few years we can estimate the speed of developemnts in Delhi.

But however we will be talking in general about the developments that have taken place in Delhi. It will be interesting to know how many people here think New Delhi is developed enough to Organize Such Events. And if it is not what can be done, why isnt anything done etc

I am also making a movie on this (hopefully will get funded fro m TOI)

NO. I think there is a lot more that needs to be done, particularly about the way people drive and behave.

Lol.. Believe you me.. Any number of commonwelath games etc cant change the way people drive and/or behave in Delhi NCR. And this is just not limited to private vehicles, Commerical and Public Transport is even more rash.

There is hardly any road sense..

As far as Commonwealth games are concerned, I'm certain they'll never again be held in India after the Delhi Experience.

They do have a website apparently which talks about venues, events and progress...

I don't think the commonwealth games will even be held in Delhi - the infrastructure is wayyyyy tooo bad, I'm sorry to keep ranting about this but why is it that India cannot fix its infrastructure and the way people behave here?? China also rose from 3rd world to developed - in less than 20 yrs and I've been to China many times - even Chinese people are FAR better behaved than Indians are.. the infrastructure in China is comparable to USA or Europe now so if they can do it why cant the Indians? Even Brazil has a much better infrastructure and better behaved people than India. They keep their cities cleaner and have respect for the environment as well as for each other - but I see in India people are rude, throw dirt everywhere and hate each other the most. In India a foreigner is still respected but Indians don't respect each other or the environment.

Its the typical person of the sub continent, earlier I used to be a very short tempered, but now i try to talk to people, make them understand as why its important to respect others and give each other a fair space in society.

Just hope things change for better.. on grounds there is none.

I cannot see how Delhi can possibly host these games. The traffic is dense and the drivers are insane. The roads are potholed and the air pollution is putrid. They will have to find a way to employ non-corrupt personnel to control trafic, beggars and thievs. I love Delhi but it is not nearly ready for such an event as this.

That website is like the ones for the hotels in India -- great photos but the reality is usually much different.

I found Delhi to be far more sanitized and calm than I expected, and thought it was because of the Commonwealth games. I mean, cars were actually stopping at red lights. Never seen that in Hyderabad...

I take it you haven't been too far away from the SEZ's and the big cities then. It is as bad or worse than India elsewhere.

Rio? in tourist areas. Have you been to the favelas?
Santos? in smaller parts. again, go to the favela's, IIRC 5 million people live there.
Sao paulo? parts of it are dirtier than any Indian city, no sanitation or water there too.
I could go on to the smaller ones.

The behaviour, won't argue with you. One, your posts usually show bias, and two, I am biased in favour of Brazilian women

I believe they will turn it around in time, Indians', including the government are aware what this means to India on the world stage.

Delhi has already seen many changes and some days the smog is even bearable.
The obvious answer to that particular nut, will probably be similar to Beijings plan, namely shut down factories and remove vehicle from the road around the time of the games.

A lick of paint, fill the ponds turn on the fountains, bedeck India Gate, round up the cows/beggars for a few weeks and there you have it. It will all be a bit cosmetic but it'll work.
India has already shown they have the pazazz with the IPL opening ceremony, they have a rich heritage in arts and music to draw on, well known Bollywood stars.
A public who are likely to turn up and cheer.

Can I make one suggestion though, to The Delhi Municipal Council, please oh please give Connaught Place a lick of paint, it won't cost the earth and will be a huge improvement.

Just hope the athletes don't have to catch an autorickshaw to the events, I can picture the scene now "what 2500 rupees, it's just down the road".

If that was to imply that Delhi is otherwise a smog infested city , i beg to differ. Things are much better now than they were a few a years back , and no where close to the what that statement implies

OK FINE - THE BIG CITIES IN BRAZIL AND CHINA AND THEIR CAPITALS ARE CLEAN - YOU AGREE?? RIGHT.. BUT LOOK AT THE CAPITAL AND ALL MAJOR CITIES OF INDIA - at least those should have been cleaned up here long ago??? They are getting worse and worse...

And I used to import products out of factories in China & Brazil to Europe and USA - so I have been to the smaller off beat places.. i've been all over Parana in Brazil and to small places even villages where factories were located in China such as Wuyi and cities like Hangzhou, Guangzhou.. and I can tell you very clearly that even those places were FARRRRR better, cleaner, more organized and civilized than Delhi or anywhere i've been in India. I admit I hate being in India and dealing with all the issues here - I don't hate Indians rather feel bad for them they have to sit here and deal with all this... there is a problem with this country - the first step to solving that problem for the people here is to ADMIT IT.

@Capt. Mahajan -

And why exactly do you always accuse me of being "Biased"? Just because my screenname has the word "Indian" in it - you seem to be perfectly fine with all the "GORAS" who say India is dirty and other things about the culture etc. here - with those you always seem to reason and agree - but in my case you prefer to attack??

Hmmmm.. I stumbled upon and older thread here from 2003 which talks about how Indians hate each other but love whites... perhaps you suffer from such a hangoever as well?? I've noticed - If a white person criticizes your country you explain and reason with them.. but if another Indian does it - you call them biased and offensive...you never get offended by any foreigners...LOL...

I don't care if they ban me from this site - it really makes me sick to see how Indians treat each other... I get it from the time I land in this country at the airports when they discover I just look white - but my name is Indian...then their attitudes change towards me..

Puchoo that part was tongue in cheek, dang I should have used a smiley
Delhi has improved remarkably since I first visited many years ago.
Like most huge metros is still suffers from smog sometimes, that's undeniable, as does Beijing I'm sure.
Anyway sorry for the misunderstanding

I thought from the rest of my post you would have picked up on the fact I'm actually quite positive about Delhi hosting the Commonwealth games and think it will all come good.

Angloindia is talking about stuff that doesn't really impact on visitors to the games, they will be chaparoned through the games, the cosmetic changes as well as the very tangible ones like the new metro will leave a positive impression. I also think the kindness of Indian nature will also help create good memories.
I've got lots and lots of them stacked up over the years.

Big events like this always have an air of falsehood about them, already there are plans in London to clear those pesky homeless people off the streets in time for the Olympics.
Games come and go in cities all around the world, leaving the social problems and personal interactions intact. They don't change enormous social problems apparent in any big city, slums, crack houses, junkie dens, joyriding teenagers, traffic congestion, single mums, kitchen deaths, fly tipping, road rage, latent aggression, soiled pavements, air quality, drunks pissing in the street, anonimity, pickpockets, muggers, touts, beggars......Were they ever meant to???

Delhi will show off in her Sunday best for a few weeks, hardly anyone will notice the many problems that plague the city, they'll watch sport with a passionate Indian crowd, get a potted rosy view of Delhi, uncover some of her many charms, eat delicious food and go home hopefully to return someday. As many first time visitors do.

I dont think so - everyone else here is also complaining about the same issues - dirt and lack of civic sense in Indian cities - but I being "Indian" am accused of being Biased by the Indian members on this forum - how come any of the non-indians have no issues with what I post?? LOL... I even have pvt. emails from some foreign members here who have expressed their disgust with so many things in India - and there is no secret about it - many of them post it as issues they face in India. Agreed they also post positive experiences but the majority are negative, anyone can see it here.
