indians at home and abroad

hi..

since many of guys have been to india i would like to know what image of a typical indian man and woman do u carry with u while returning back? (i know ...i know..cant be generalized ..Diff region..diff ppl etc etc ..but still some quality which made an impression..good or bad)

and second part of question is , when u come across indians in ur own country ..are they different from the image u have of indians in india? any examples to illustrate are always welcome.

since i started the thread i will post my reply .indian guy pampered at home has to learn to do cooking first of all _lol bascially be more tolerant , more broad minded but by heart they mostly remain the same i personally feel any young indian professional abroad goes thru following stages:

1) noone to help or do ur chores for u..do everything by urself !! try get adjusting to it fast n remember home _lol

2)if u r in developed countries then enjoy the liberty and freedom u hav got and criticize india but do remember ur home very fondly so as to go backonce a year to eat homemade food

3)but once u decide to settle down in life ..rediscover all ur indian roots and values and rush back to ur hometown n ask ur parents to find a girl for u_lol

4)come back to where u r working(as pay is good) and go back to step 2

and here are my thoughts abt the bulk of indian tourists going abroad

1)if going to a country where u dont know anyone, book urself thru a travel agency

2)make sure buses are airconditioned ,hotels are 3 star , food is taken caren of and oh just pick up a tour brochure _lol in any case being able to say "i saw europe" (in 10 days) is more imp than wht n how much u actually see

3)pack ur bags calculating 2 set of clothes per day

4) first day of tour, all indians in one group..admire the country ..admire the development..find the people funny !!
noneed for local interaction..after all the tourguide is there to tell u everything..enjoy indian meals provided by the tour agency no need to taste local cuisine(half of group typically veg..other half doesnt eat beef n pork)

5) sleep at 10 or at max at 11 (if u r discussing things with ur new found indian friends on the tour)

6)repeat 4 and 5 till tour gets over.

7)before catching the return flight make emotional speeches abt having a good time n pass diaries to exchange email ids n phone numbers.

8)when u r in india...tell everyone u hav seen europe _lol or america or whteverforget the diary in 7 and continue with ur life

ofcourse u may chose to wholeheartedly agree or disagree but i really believe its true for the majority and i speak from some personal experience infact it really amazes me to see so many foreigners coming to india on their own (couples , single guys or single women) when its supposedly such a hard country to travel whereas indians prefer to travel in a very protected environment even when the countries are so toursit friendly. (there r loads of other factors also but i dont wanna hog all the space here_lol) so feel free to add ur thoughts

Well I for one remember all those smiling faces, the general happy, hard-working disposition of the many people I met through my travels. Even poor people who have very little material goods tend to be happier, on average, than many people here in Canada...

Well, Indians who are Canadian citizens are pretty much exactly like everyone else here... except they still eat chapati and dal, tend to be rather traditional in nature, and the girls are still very pretty. You don't have to marry them just to kiss them either. haha

What interests me most is when Indians come to Canada... on Indiamike we always talk about visiting India, but sometimes the reverse can be interesting (or devastating).

There is a very large population of non-resident Indians living in Canada, and more immigrating every day. I know a family of Indians who've lived in here for the past 20 years and they find it harder to adjust to the Indian way of life. When they were on vacation and I met them in Delhi, I had to explain how to buy train tickets, that they needed their passport, how much to pay for an auto rickshaw. I was a real Indian dude at times.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fense, however. I've known about eight people who have moved to Canada (or visited here for an extended period of time) with mixed results and very mixed emotions. Some of them just didn't like it here at all. Despite the ammenities of our "rich" country, about half of those who visited couldn't wait to get back home to India. And about half of those who moved to Canada permanently have since moved back to India. It's a mixed bag, really. I
've seen some real emotional rollercoasters in the past year, with friends visiting me from Delhi who simply couldn't adjust to life here. They found it cold and unfriendly and were very vocal about this. There are big cultural differences, indeed. And there's a helluva lot more to happiness than what you see on American TV... big house, fancy car, 2.5 kids and everybody happy with their lives...

And on a related topic...

I met a guy from Kerala today, he moved to Canada two years ago and he wants to move back. Very friendly guy. He and his wife went nuts during the long, cold Canadian winter, shivering all day long. Can't blame him. He probably never saw snow before except on TV. I was buying a roadmap of India and he and I got talking about Munnar, Fort Cochin, the tropical weather, the cultural differences... I don't think immigration is for everyone. He tried to convince to to go work in Kerala while he was working in Calgary. Meanwhile, I do dream of returning to India...
