a close shave

Spine,

I'm gonna try to get a shave in Mumbai. What does the guy look like who did you? Can you tell me more about where to find him? Where in relation to the gate is he?

Thanks,
Andrew

The white stuff they rub on the wet face is ALUM. This is a natural disinfectant used in place of after-shave lotion. You can get a head massage also from many of the barbershops. Ask him to hit a bit soft if you can’t stand the thud!!
Lookout for a signboard reading 'Hair Salon' or 'Barbershop' or 'Hair Stylist' on any street side.

the smaller the ville, the cheaper the shave. DON'T set foot in a Mumbai barber without negotiating the price, or you'll be getting clipped!!!! colaba is ridiculous. Try around Crawford or Bhindi Bazaar

Price wise, the worst I found was Kovalam, they wanted Rs30.

I always give Rs20 no matter what they ask, most times they ask me for Rs15 though many times only Rs10.

At this very moment I would give Rs1000 to be sitting in the chair.

Barber - always fun.

The place in Mumbai

If you walk directly away from India gate (that is away from the water side) it's a booth on a corner (not too far from Tandulkars restaurant, but on the other side of the rd). If i think properly his name was Mohamed, good shave cos he did both with and against the grain so it lasted long, but it cost 10 for the shave and he said he wanted 20 for a face massage (i know it should be less, but it was the only place i could find after the 27 hrs trip from Varanasi, that was a street stall).

best shave ever....

My husband and I are currently in Kumily, Kerala.....and today he had the best shave and haircut! ( and I did check out the new blade........) We paid 100 rps.....but didn't want to quibble over the price as the result was so wonderful, and the barber was clearly giving him the "special treatment" I was wondering what that white powder was! But hey....does anyone know what the white rock is they rub on the face afterwards? Is that alum too? My husband said it felt really refreshing after he rubbed him with this rock thing......

If the rock thing was something like a white crystal, it's an antiseptic. I have seen it get used to clot any blood in case shave is a little rough.
But 100Rs was way too much. You could have another 5+ shaves with that kind of money.

It's really hard to have any idea what to pay, as they always say you decide! I realise now that when my husband paid 70 rupees for a shave and haircut, it was probably too much, but as the experiences were so enjoyable and included strange head massages and ear pulling sessions, it probably didn't matter anyway!

Thumbs down Not great

Hey Spine, I was down by the India gate yesterday. I needed a shave. I found Mohammed. It was a crappy shave. He left a bit just under my nose and cut my cheek (which I didn't know about until I got back to my room and saw it - it's still visible).

Anybody... is this the way these shaves normally are? I could do a much better job myself for free.

Andrew

Well geez i'm sorry

I found that shave particularly good mainly because he was throrough, he did with and against the grain making it last allot longer.

Neway maybe u missed my disclaimer at the top:

1. I the party who started this thread, accpet no responsibility for bad shaves had by the readers
2. It's probably a gd i dea to whne having a shave watch and check wot the guys doing and correct him, don't pay till ur happy
3. If it's too much go grow a beard, or shave urself

Ok so it's not so much of a legal document as a rant, but u get wot i'm sayin, if u have a better barber post it,

Like where is gd to go in Dehli (i'm here at the moment for the next two days, i leave for home so i'm sad that i'm leaving india)

My first trip here is comin to an end, but it's been gr8. Bikaneer was terrific, Jaipur, orcha Khajaraho, Goa all were unrea, but most of all the people just tripped me out every moment.

Indias a strange place to be:
For instance I joked to a neswpaper guy "So if i buy the paper will it have good news?" and he replied that "We all want good news but, we must work withiin ourselves to make it".... Woaaa deep

I just had a good shave in Gokarna.

In a small building at the south-east corner of the "tank".
