I hear what you're saying. I misunderstood you the first time, sorry. I've never heard of people aborting when they know it's a girl before. Is this something that happens a lot in India?

That is reaching for me. What about genetic defects? That counselling is done routinely in CA. And I was so poor at that time that the state paid for the amniocoetosis. Still have the gene charts..

I lived in Romania for a while, and similar stories abound locally about the Roma (Gypsy, low-caste Indians who trekked from Rajastan to Europe in the 1400s). And indeed, I saw some beggar children with quite horrible mutialtions - knees backwards etc - though don't know how this was caused of course. I have reason to believe that some parents are so desperate that they would rather keep their child like that to ensure begging income than seek treatment...

Well , they have passed a law against prenatal gender diagnosis (long prison terms etc. ) ; saw very large signs about it two years ago.
There is also an Indian newmade film on the subject , can`t remember the name just now.

People in advanced western countries often abort a fetus if they know it is a boy, if the mothers are hemophiliac (sp?) gene carriers. Girls don'T get the disease, but they pass it on. Boys do get the disease. I have a friend who has 3 girls...each time she was pregnant she was tested for the baby's gender. I was apalled--but relieved that each time the baby was a girl (however, still a hemophiliac carrier).

In China where there is a 1 child per family policy, it is extremely common to abort a female fetus. going to result in a huge social problem shortly since there will be a shortage of women to marry.

I suppose in India, the worries of a dowery for a poor family would influence whether or not to abort a female fetus.

I have heard that in China and India both it is illegal to do gender testing for the purpose of abortion--but I imagine that it still extremely common.
I wonder what is worse---aborting a female fetus, or female infanticide.
