I am posting this question on behalf of an Aussie friend who is a History student and is at present working on a research paper that explores cultural differences in various parts of India and its influence on people's approach to authority.
One of the interesting historical trend he is exploring has to do with how people approached the independence movement in different parts of India - specially the more demanding style of freedom movement - whose followers were not simply happy with Gandhi's approach of negotiation and diplomacy but wanted a more aggresive approach and demanded that the colonial forces quit india. (Gandhi adopted the "Quit India" approach much later under pressure from more extreme leaders like Lala Lajpat Rai amongst others). So he asked me to list 5 Independence Movement leaders from each of the four zones in India, who stood up against the colonial rulers and demanded freedom and showed an ability to stand up against authority without caring for personal consequences (rather than negotiating for it) over 1857 - 1947 - I could only partially answer his question and am looking for help from other IMers to complete the list 1. East (Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, North-East) - Bagha Jatin - Subhash C Bose - Khsudiram - Aurobindo Ghosh - Masterda Surya Sen 2. West (Maharashtra, Gujrat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh) - Bal Gangadhar Tilak - Vir Savarkar - Gokhale 3. North (Kashmir, Punjab, UP, Delhi, HP, Haryana) - Bhagat Singh - Lala lajpat Rai - Sukhdeo 4. South (Andhra pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala) Advance thanks for your help. |

And your Aussie friend can't get any of this information from the zillion books written about Indian freedom struggle (both in English and various Indian vernacular languages)? Does your friend know of a building that exists in most universities around the world -- LIBRARY (assure him/her that there are some real nices ones in Australia as well).

Agree 2 cents! Being a teacher, it always irritates me when students want quick answers from the internet and want to avoid going to the library. I see your point though

Would appreciate if you can write a couple of lines against each name that demonstrates the person's aggressive stand-off with authority.
Thanks And yes - there is the library and the internet - but none of them necessarily give an insight into the intelligent minds of India-obsessed IMers...... ![]() As per my friend, it is apparently difficult to find names for some parts of the list. (As per his research, some parts of India simply did not have any tradition of standing up against authority. These parts produced the maximum number of obedient civil servants) |

Now, here I would part company. Much of the freedom struggle took strength from traditional Brahmin clericals (Maharashtra & Bengal come to mind). I would put it in the context of removing barriers to upward promotion (elite replacement?)..

When you search for fire-brand revolutionary freedom fighters - you still tend to end up with Punjab, Bengal and Maharashtra - and many of them had nothing to do with either Brahminism or clerical jobs. |

Rashbehari Bose. (1885-1945) a romantic revolutionary leader against the British in India and an organiser of the INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY. He was hunted by the police due to his active participation in the failed bomb throwing attempt directed at the Governor General and Viceroy LORD CHARLES HARDINGE in Delhi. But somehow he managed to escape British intelligence and reach Japan in 1923. It was Bose who was instrumental in persuading the Japanese authorities to stand by the Indian nationalists and ultimately to support actively the Indian freedom struggle abroad. Bose convened a conference in Tokyo on March 28-30, 1942, which decided to establish the Indian Independence League. At the conference he moved a motion to raise an army for Indian liberation. He convened the second conference of the League at Bangkok on June 22, 1942. It was at this conference that a resolution was adopted to invite SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE to join the League and take its command as its president………(http://banglapedia.search.com.bd/HT/B_0593.htm)
