Angry Indian companies are the most corrupt apparently

Leading exporters undermine development with dirty business overseas

Overseas bribery by companies from the world’s export giants is still common, despite the existence of international anti-bribery laws criminalising this practice, according to the Transparency International 2006 Bribe Payers Index (BPI), the most comprehensive survey of its kind to date.

The BPI looks at the propensity of companies from 30 leading exporting countries to bribe abroad. Companies from the wealthiest countries generally rank in the top half of the Index, but still routinely pay bribes, particularly in developing economies. Companies from emerging export powers India, China and Russia rank among the worst. In the case of China and other emerging export powers, efforts to strengthen domestic anti-corruption activities have failed to extend abroad.

I think this survey would be more meaningful if they indicated which govt's were most corrupt. Lets say China exports a lot of goods to USA (and they do) and have to bribe the US govt. The survey only counts what China bribes the US govt and not what the US companies bribe the US govt.

Well quite.

Who's at fault? the bribers? or the people who accept, or perhaps demand the bribes?

This report seems very one-sided.

The company I worked for in London had a number of European branches, including one in Italy.

It was necessary and customary for the Italian branch to pay bribes to various officials. This, naturally (for Italy), was entered as business expense.

But the company's accounts had to be consolidated in UK.

Bribes? A deductable business expense? The British Inland Revenue didn't like that idea at all! Oh, dear me, no...

CII seeks national debate on graft

CII seeks national debate on graft

John Satish K / New Delhi October 19, 2006

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has roped in Infosys Chief Mentor NR Narayana Murthy to head its campaign against corruption.

To be kicked off in Bangalore tomorrow, the campaign, Integrity India, a brainchild of CII President R Seshasayee, aims to launch a national debate on the widespread corruption in all spheres of economic activity.

India this year earned the dubious distinction of being the most corrupt exporting nation in Transparency International’s Bribe Payers’ Index.

Some euphemisms I have seen in use around the world for bribes:

representation to officials
entertainment
transport expenses
victualling (I know somebody who found it hard to explain 2000 dollars worth of "victualling" in Cambodia)

and the best of them all
miscellaneous business expenses.
