Be clothed by the sun and the spring rain ... (you will be red and wet though)

Nice post, Triliana. The only thing I'd add is if you feel hot and bothered by the steamy, hot monsoon months jeans and churidars can make you more hot. This is the time for the loose pure cotton salwars - not a hint of polyester! Even light cotton pants would be better than jeans - and use drawstrings for the waist; they are cooler than elastic or tight bands.

You could wear a turban for a camel safari - that seems to be the standard item for foreigners here. But nowhere else...
So that's why I was getting stared at by the locals at the Bikaner railway station ???

(In all seriousness), without remembering that I had put it on, I walked to the railway station, wearing my the turban that I was given at my brother's wedding and sat down to eat dhal from my tiffin.

Cheers
Zoltan

I don't get what the big deal of looking like a tourist is. I loved walking into a nice hotel and having everyone be super nice. Heck, back home they call security on me. If you do not look like a tourist in the first two seconds someone glances at you that cuts down on a lot of the tourist hassles..
Once you are able to absorb and process enough of the local vibe you will not look like a tourist. On long bus rides around India I would image that I was the driver's assitant, In my mind I would sit there, available for any questions the locals may have. I imagined my self as an expert in local history and legends. I would posses great knowledge of every road and village we passed. I knew every one on the bus. You might laugh, but give it a try, it will change your vibe.
