Indiamike v The Thorn Tree...no contest!

I came to this forum as a refugee from the Thorn Tree, I was tired of the abusive nature that seems to be a continous theme there. It's so refreshing reading posts where people genuinely want to help their fellow travellers.

Have the prats who seem so happy to ruin the TT, not found this site?

Since I found Indiamike I've not been back......so thanks to all the members who make this such a nice forum!

Lightbulb IndiaMike v. TT

Three (?) years ago I had found both the sites. At the time IM was a fledgeling. My original purpose was to find some partner to go trekking... and there were NO trekking related posts on IM at that time. The TT was in its older version. It did not have a separate 'Trekking and Mountaineering' section.... so I was generally reading ALL India related posts.

Yes, the TT can get very nasty and abusive at times.... but not ALL the times. I found it so abt 25% of the times. My real objection to the TT was that there are a HUGE no. of posters out there. Sometimes logging in after a mere six hours; I would find that my post has been delegated to page seven or something. This did not (mostly) allow for meaningful discussions, let alone finding trekking partners. Objection no. two: your posts get deleted after around a month cuz they simply do not have the disk space required! IM has all topics organized subjectwise and properly indexed under the "Forum". It really helps if you wanna pick up some thread after eight months.

AND of course, the IMer's are a very congenial lot! They make a newbie feel at home instantly!

But we do owe thanks to big brother TT for allowing us "refugee status" when IM was offline due to "maintenance & upgrade" reasons.

Thank you Thorn Tree... and of course, thank you IndiaMike!!

TT vs IM

It's better for India-related questions because it's much more concentrated on the subject, It's small and cosy and you'll get your answers much quicker. And also because people who travel to India and use this forum are usually such a nice bunch

i believe this is the downside of the fact that India is on the top of the backpackers list of destinations (and is a huge country).

i have "lived" on S American branch of TT for two months last winter and haven't noticed abusive posts or huge number of posters... may be because S America has so many different countries that noone could claim to be authority in most of them and "dominate" the branch. we had specialists of Bs Aires, Patagonia, Peru-Macchu Pichu, etc, and everyone one lived in peace and mutual respect.

i am frequenting the Central Asia branch also (prob'ly one of the least visited) and there is even a nice feeling of a close community there.

Niceness is enforced. IM gets edited pretty swiftly and people get booted. This could be good or bad, depending on your POV.
