IndiaMike mentioned in Guardian

Yesterdays UK newspaper The Guardian included an article on working in India.

Mentioned IndiaMike.com as a valuable source of information for people considering it

I did a quick search and failed to find the article: glad you did so others can see.

When I used to read the Guardian everyday I found their technical stuff pretty dire: looks like they still can't even get a URL right!

Hey, Mike! You 'corrected' my Thread title!

Guardian; known to many as The Grauniad do the very high number of misprints that it used to carry in the days when it was the only national UK paper to be printed and published in Manchester, rather than London, and had to be produced quicker as a result (or at least that was one explanation!)

It takes a while to get used to what passes for "normal" in India, says Paul Jeynes who works for IT consultancy Parity from his base in Northern Ireland. Jeynes has been working in Bangalore for two weeks a month since last November.

"It is a very different working environment and you have to be very sensitive to the way they work. There's a layer of bureaucracy in India that you don't get in the UK. A lot of this is to do with what they call 'dignity of employment', based on everyone having a place in society according to what they do.

"When I am over there, for example, I can't go and make myself a cup of coffee, or pick my printouts up from the printer. There's someone to do that for you. It can be infuriating, because you could easily do these things yourself, but that's what the other person's job is."

It has also taken a while for the people Mr Jeynes has been working with to start to feel comfortable around him.

"My job over there is to go and assist an Indian software company and improve their performance. But it has taken time to build a relationship with the people I am working with.

"Now they are much more confident in what they are doing and becoming more comfortable around me," he says. "It's important to be patient with the people you are working with, and not to impose on them and tell them how to do things. That gets their backs up."
And other such down-to-earth observations for the prospective overseas worker

edit: Not so sure though about the merits of what IndiaMike purportedly has to offer such people:

Quote:
"It has some good advice from people who live and work there, both Indian and western. Tips include: don't go out by yourself after nine or 10 at night, watch out for the cab drivers, and women are more likely to get their bums pinched in north India than south India."
Hmmm is that really all people pick up from here? <sigh> Oh well it's a lead still innit

Mike, you are famous man now! Perhaps you should ask some companies to sponsor this site....or perhaps one of those tourist websites like lonely planet or expedia may offer you cash for this site now?

I think this is the second time it's been cited there. I think I came to Indiamke reading some travel article written on the Guardian or it could be the Independant.

Mike, I read the article and see that the URL is wrong .. a simple way to help people who genuinely want to see this site of ours is to make a redirect on your webserver for all clicks pointing to http://indiamike.com/india/show .. a simple redirect will take them to the front page or anywhere you want them to land.

I think you should manage this ..its simple enough or i can help
