India travel articles - today's NYTimes

In case anyone is interested, there are a couple of articles in today's NYTimes about travelling in India-

Kochi (Kerala)

Taj Mahal article

The Kerala article especially is very pleasant to read

They were good articles but I was still hurt that there wasn't one mention of this site in the entire travel section (bastards )

Surprisingly, Sunday morning all my neighbors sent their copies of the NYT to my house knowing that it would interest me. I wish they would print more articles on India so I can continue getting the Sunday paper for free .

The NYTimes provides the WORST imaginable coverage of India. Its travel articles are shallow and patronizing (and Victorian), and they're all the same (as in "My husband and I spent a week on a houseboat in Kerala, God's Own Country, and had the nicest time with the little peasant boy who caught fish on the banks of the river . . .").

Its social issue coverage is painful to read in its lack of sophistication and context. The NYTimes believes all Indians are poor and lack the intellect and information to better themselves. Its India bureau chief (Amy Waldman) often gets her facts wrong (she once wrote about an AIDS clinic 100 kms east of Chennai), and she is pretty much the only staffer writing non-travel pieces about India.

The worst was, a few years ago, after the Sikh Day Parade in New York (all the different communities here have their one big celebration day with parade). The papers usually have some photos with a story about the immigrant community. The day after the Sikh parade, the NYTimes ran a front-page story about female infanticide in Punjab.

The best general newspaper coverage of India comes from The Economist, Financial Times, Guardian, and Christian Science Monitor.

And, yes, I have written to the Times to complain . . .

The SF Chronicle picked up the Taj Mahal article. The thing I find about those travel section pieces is that they are for some other tourists; it's not the way I would see India.

maybe they just need to tattoo the image on the inside of amy waldman's eyelid and sew it shut, so that she can write rants about the perfection of the taj mahal uninterrupted by bears on chains or all the ....people....in india getting in the way of her taj picnic.

Hey all,

You must read this book called "Holy cow" that was written by a Australian tourist who came to India.

She spent a lot of time in India and came a 2nd time for personal reasons, coz she married an Indian.

She has portrayed in her book that India is the most filthiest and dirtiest place in the country and says young girls can get raped in hospitals et all. She left and poor note.

Most travellers seem to do this. Anyway, there are loads of travellers who love this country.

She didn't marry an Indian- he was an ABC correspondent based in India for a while.

Holy Cow's discussed in this thread too, apparently it's a bit controversial around here.
