India trading advice
Hi people, my first post here but been reading for a while -
I am looking for sincere advice for how to get around the middle hands in trading, specifically in Delhi. I'd like to get straight to the source and pay directly to the people who do the actual work, my own private fair trade, if you know what I mean. I'm no hot shot of any kind here, I design a bit and get things made, soft textiles and accessories like cushions, scarves, bags, purses etc. and then sell in markets and festivals over the summer. Any good tips and ideas from you hardcore Indianites? I've been doing this off and on for some years but still feel like an India-amateur Any ideas welcome, also about specific manufacturers, markets, areas etc. mainly in Delhi.. Peace and prosperity, Nelli |

My elder daughter's friend is a free lance fashion designer & her mother is in garment manufacturing so if you are interested then I could try to get you connected to them. We live in Delhi.

Thanks for your replies.
Rohan: table linnen is not what I'm looking for - but thanks for answering! Jyotirmoy: sounds interesting, I'll contact you when I'm in Delhi, sometime the next three weeks. Thanks people! |

nelli, I understand that most of the stuff you are interested in are made in Rajasthan. however, it is a "cottage industry" which means that raw materials are provided by the middle man to workers, who take the materials home, work on it and then bring back the completed items. In a system like this, I suspect it will quite difficult to eliminate the middle man.

Crvlrv, you're absolutely right - what I really want to try is that I, instead of the middle man who I order from, bring the material to the workers and pay for the work. By that help a couple of families get a descent income instead of the rip off 5/10 rupees per piece someone gets if he's lucky. It makes me sick the way things go and how I just get along because it's comfortable. I'm just a small fish in the ocean here but it's a way to contribte to a healthier world...
If I just knew where to start but hell, I'll work it out! Off to India tomorrow anyway and take it from there. Peace and prosperity to you all! |
