India Toursim Some Stats

NDTV quoting the Incredible India site brings out some stats about tourists in India.
I had seen the trend for 2005 too (they are reporting 2006 data now) and even in 2005 Tirupati ruled with the domestic tourists.

Quote:
Andhra Pradesh attracts the maximum number of domestic tourists while national capital Delhi gets the most foreign travellers, say official figures.
In 2006, while 111.7 million Indian travellers visited Andhra Pradesh, famed for its temples - especially the Tirumala Tirupati shrine, 1.9 million foreign tourists came to Delhi.

Quote:
The report showed that very few tourists - both domestic and foreign - visit the northeast states.

In 2006, 80,137 domestic tourists visited Arunachal Pradesh, while only 607 foreigners could travel to this state. Similarly, Manipur attracted 116,984 domestic tourists as compared to 295 foreign ones, while Meghalaya had 401,529 domestic tourists and 4,287 international travellers.

Has to be Tirupathi. I don't think AP is anywhere in the top ten otherwise, just guessing.

Oh yes, of course it is because of Tirupati. And UP because of the Taj Mahal.

tirupati is surely more a religious spot than a tourist spot. dont understand why the GOI confuses a pilgrimage with a vacation.

A tourist is somebody who makes a tour regardless of their destination - isn't it? Didn't see a reference to the word 'vacation' in that report ..... but even so it is defined as a 'fixed period of cessation from work' which is also quite encompassing.

In India, with the thousands of sacred places/sites distributed throughout the country - I should think that all tourists(native & foreign) could also be classified as pilgrims whether they plan it, are aware of it, admit it, or not. The word 'tourist' & 'tourism' in the government enterprise scheme of things is probably more marketable and understanding internationally than 'pilgrim' & 'pilgrimage' one would think.

fine then, tirupati is the biggest tourist attraction in india, not the taj mahal, nor konark, or hampi, udaipur, jaisalmer, darjeeling or shimla.

Tirupati/Tirumala didn't really work for me, but I'd still advise anyone thinking of going there to try it.

Four main reasons it didn't work for me.

1, I'd been to the Golden temple a few weeks earlier, nothing can compare to that in my opinion.

2, I was completely exhausted from too much travel, Varanasi to Tirupati, by train with only a few hours break (as my first train was about 8 hours late).

3, Tirumala is a tourist town with loads of things to see and do, I hadn't even read up about the place and was completely shocked.

4, you can't smoke anywhere in Tirumala, and you'd probibly need the best part of a whole day to really have a look around, the first I knew of the smoking ban was as we approached Tirumala. (You also can't smoke within about half a mile of the Golden temple)
