With 1.2 Billion in population, India will top the list in almost any human statistic which is not normalized for population.

Yep. Had the same story in the TOI too, and thats what I thought.

I imagine the numbers must be still high, as a percentage of population, though.

It probably ranks much lower on tourist murders I would suspect.

I guess this is an Idiotic report....India is mentioned just for the sake of it..

Quote:
The rate of murder in India is three per 100,000 people while that of rape is four in 100,000, according to the report
And how much difference is that :

Quote:
However, taking into account population differences, South Africa emerges as a much more dangerous place, with 65.27 murders per 100,000 people and 115.8 rapes per 100,000 people.
And read this :

Quote:
For the same period, United States reported 16,692 murders while Pakistan registered 9,631 cases.
Now according to the CIA site, https://www.cia.gov/library/publicat.../print/us.html, US has around 300 million people, 4 times less than India.

And Pakistan has around 160 million people, around 8 times less than India. I guess anyone can do the maths now.

Yep.

Maybe we don't shoot each other enough? So next headline, "India tops the list in knifings and fisticuffs!"

I read this story on the Beebs yesterday and I have to say, I was disappointed with the twist of the story. As all have said, rate per 100,000 puts India no where near the top..

What sort of idiot wrote that article......and does he/she have some personal hatred of Indians?

Journalists shouldn't be allowed to use statistics unless they're going to make a meaningful statement.

Here's the best info I could find quickly:

I am afraid that my expectation of any news item concerning India sinks as soon as I see it it is from the BBC. We have been relegated to the funny spot before the weather forecast.

I check the BBC news almost every day --- for some reason, keeping an eye on who's been knifed in Ilford or shot in Hackney gives me some sort of connection to UK. But I don't much look at anything they say about India. I'd rather look at the local papers.

And now, from that funny place where people will worship
you if you have an elephant's head, the latest murder figures...

Yes. Very funny, thank you.

Sadly it was an Indian, Sunil Raman, from BBC News Delhi.

I bet he's getting some from his fellow Indians.

Or does he do this regularly?

Here, I can only watch BBC at about 4am, which means I never watch it.

Problem with the news at bbc are always the headlines. Figures for Pakistan are two times higher than in India (percentage for 100.000 hab) and the country is not in the grikoo's list????

It seems to be a trend amongst newspapers here and now the BBC news website to put every other country and particularly developing countries in a negative light whenever the opportunity arises. This is probably also true of the media of many other western countries.

Also makes you wonder whether a lot of the so called well meaning politicians are just paying lip service in wanting to support the development of poorer nations.

Haven't been there for a while, obviously, but when I was watching the BBC, there seemed a very high number of Indian names in the credits. Didn't seem to stop them talking tosh about India!

The stats are from a 1998-2000 UN survey, so not only are they a decade out of date but are also a voluntarily reported survey. This means certain nations may not e represented due to not having provided the data. Only 63 countries are in the list.

Best I could do in 15 seconds.

Clearly shows that India is not likely to be at the top of the list, however.
