India from mid-June to mid-July

A miracle has happened: I found someone who wants to rent my apartment for a month. Of course, my first thought was INDIA!!! My second thought was that this is not the best time weather-wise. Does anyone have a good suggestion? Ladakh would be too crowded in June and since I know it virtually empty in October, I wouldn't enjoy it. Any other ideas?? Somem hills would be nice...

Actually, Ladakh is a good choice at that time. If the weather hasn't socked in hill stations that would be nice also..

How about Srinagar and the surrounding areas??

But pls do not fall for all the scams that I keep reading about. These concern the travel touts in Delhi and Srinagar charging foreigners/tourists horrendous prices for the tours and treks.

I was told it's crowded in June but I was there in October and I can definitely say it was empty. I loved it that way!

Empty is good, I've researched the road/weather conditions to death, but I never thought to ask about people

So let's hear it people

How crowded is it?

July... Leh definitely gets crowded and if you are arriving there in the late afternoon it can be difficult to find accomodation. If you are there for trekking then just avoid the more popular or easy routes, I guess.

Mikki, consider interior HP - similar to Ladakh, but better as it has Spiti (barren hi alti desert) and Kinnaur valley (valley of fruits - very green with sutlej flowing through).

I just came back from there this weekend

I'd suggest staying at Chitkul and trekking to Kanda but be wary of crossing into China should u trek too much

best i liked of chitkul was DRY desert type mountains where we were riding and thick coniferous forests on the other river bank - simply great place to be!! Wotsay?

@Mikki: Another log of the similar route: http://freebirds.50webs.com/kanda.html

These buddies actually hit Kanda, while we turned back due to sheer lack of time!!
